Re: Problem with Datgen.exe

So by installing you get this error? Try to run the setup as administrator and in compatibility (XP SP2?) mode.

Yes, I have tried many methods, even the above method, I still have the same error. This happen everytime when the installation reaches 100%, and just before 100%, it gives me the datgen.exe error, and get an installation error code, and fails.

And can you find that file manually?

When the answer is no, then try to delete all the files at the TEMP-folder and then try to install again.

It seems it is the registry key problem, the thing is, I tried to deleted all the files I can, but it seems doesn't work at all. Every time when I tried to reinstall it again, it always happened the same thing. And now I don't have a clue what to do now. Is there a way to fix the error?

    Here is my last hope:

Hold the windows key on your keyboard and press the r button > The Run dialogue should appear > Type C:\Program Files\Common Files into the text box and click OK
Right-click the InstallShield folder, and select Rename > Change the name to InstallShieldOld > Start the game installation again to reinstall the InstallShield components with the newest version.
If the install succeeds after this then delete the InstallShieldOld folder.

Did you remember to run as an admin, in compatibility mode while you were at it? Because otherwise I have no idea how to solve this.

Did you / anyone solve the problem? I have the same and can't install the game again either...
I've got First Decade (and Generals loose).

On my system, there is no such InstallShield folder to click on?

  • I have the same problem at the moment.

Before I installed Origin with the Ulti version of C&C Generals the old CD version run normal and there were no install issues.

I have Windows 8 and wanted to install the old CD version and deleted the origin version.

Now the issues began and I got the same errors with Datgen.exe

We got into the same problem.

In case you get an error about a missing Datagen.exe during the installation process you can solute that issue by the following steps:

    1. Start the installation and wait for the error, abort installation

    2. Restart Installation and wait until the installatin process requests CD2 (the datagen.exe should be there at this moment)

    3. IMPORTANT: Make the datagen.exe write protected (right click -> properties)

    4. proceed Installation

The Installation worked, the game did start, but we were not able to patch it and didnt find a solution for it.

How do you do that. I got this error too. I installed it and played it a bit and installed zero hour (I have deluxe) tried to patch it it failed so I deleted the program files directory (A critical error on my part) I wanted to save time and hoped it would just say remove it from programs and features when I went there but it didn't it made me uninstall. So I reinstalled but at the end it gave me this error and aborted (Even most of the game files were there and I could run it (Although it would not actually open) and I have to delete them for it to even get to the end if I try again. I have tried compatability mode and admin (On windows 8.1) and it still won't work (DatGen.exe in the folder the error points to which exists during installation). I have since installed it on another computer with win 8.1 and it worked although I haven't installed zero hour on that yet so it is not the discs. Any help is much appreciated.

I think I found a solution which I don't want to deny you:

In my case the hint with the write protection of Datgen.exe was very helpful, however it did not solve the problem completey. The error message did not occur anymore but when I click on "Finish" after the Installation has been completed I get another error saying "1628: Failed to complete installation." Also Zero Hour was still not working.

Then I made another attempt to install Zero Hour but this time saved the whole content of the temp folder which is created during installation. Before changing to CD2 I made Datgen.exe write protected again. And finally after the installation has been completed I copied all files from my previous backup back to the temp folder before clicking "Finish". No error occured and Zero Hour runs like a charme now 🙂

Hope this helps all you guys too 😉

  • When you hold the windows button and press R, type in the exact location of that file and it will pop up. the one starting with C:\
