Dead Space first timer. Does this game hold up for all of you?

Just started playing this game as an on my channel. I like it so far, it's not the best port I've ever played, but the game itself definitely feels like it's there. I'm wondering if this is because it's my first time and everything is new to me somehow managed to avoid playing any of them to this point. When I die I do feel that the stuff I already saw is a little too jump scare oriented and a bit tiresome while also scary and fun. So, do those of you that are more familiar with the series feel that the first game holds up in your opinion https://vlc.onl/?

@parker521 The jump scares were a huge part of the game back when. I understand these days not everyone is for that and that's totally understandable. There are multiple articles on this one too.

What would you change in the game from the jump scares? How would you go about making sure you know the enemy is coming up behind you or behind a corner?

  • I played the original twice, 2008 I think? Also bought the original from EA on sale, but stopped as everything unlocked - no challenge or feeling of reward when getting a new upgrade etc.

Anyway, to your question the remake is an improvement. Of course it takes a fairly powerful rig to get the most out of it I have ROG Strix RTX 3080ti. I have had no stutter, all smooth, no crashes at all. Also it may be my age, but I feel it's a bit harder that the original. Also there is more freedom to bo back and do side missions, or do them as they come.

So, you are missing nothing, and getting a game with great graphics (with right Hardware). There are extra side missions too. The original is now considered a real classic space/horror so I don't want to compare subjectively. Technically the new one is far better.

P.S I know many people will strongly disagree with me as there are many posts about various smal - l and serious bugs - none story progression and more. But I have experienced none of that, just a demanding game which tales a bit of time to get right in NV control panel (or AMD equiv.) and set graphics in game. I was able to re-set graphics menu 3 times and now running all on Ultra with DLSS quality or whatever it's called in AA option. TAA is available too. In fact I've maxed it out now. My CPU btw is i9-9900ks OCed to 5.2GHz stable, matches my GPU well.

I can't complain as simply everything is running very well indeed. I don't know, maybe I am lucky? But absolutely the remake is the best IMO regardless of having played the original or not.

I use EA app, not via Steam, but that should make no difference. Also my xbox 1 wireless controller works perfectly. I wasn't sure about that, but it does. Switch on before starting the game.

Enjoy - and take time/read up on graphics settings. I say that due to the many posts of folks who have had various glitches.

I understand that. When I play games like this, I attempt to do 100% because I like the challenge. I've played some games where I got awesome content at the end, and I thought to myself - well I'm basically done with the game. Why give this now?

I've built my own rig but the GPU isn't quite what yours is but for the most part, it is pretty smooth for me. I've noticed that it is a bit harder but for me I like it. Going back to things you missed for me is the important part. I don’t want to have to follow a guide in case I miss something that I needed or for an achievement. It is okay to be objective. The original will always be a classic. Comparing them is okay for gameplay, mechanics, controls, etc. They did the same thing with Mass Effect. Original updates/controls or new ones with a different feel.

I have to admit your setup does beat my own, so I can only imagine for you it runs much smoother. Im close but I think you may process those GPU settings far better than I do. There are a lot of posts on things that I get and it is hard to meet all of those expectations. I've been in the gaming industry for years so I've seen it all when it comes to what players want and expect out of a game. We the gamers are the ones to immerse ourselves in that world so we have an expectation to be satisfied. Bugs happen sure but we all remember the Skyrim days. Those bugs were crazy sometimes.

Being one of my favorite games or horror/sci-fi games, it is always nice to hear another fan say it is one of their favorite games. Makes this job more worth it. I cannot play without my Xbox controller. I tried. It isn't the pc controls are bad either, but after years of a controller in your hand, it is what you are used to.

  • @parker521 I haven't had the chance to play this new remaster, but the original games are one of my all-time favorite franchises (peep my profile pic, Lol). I'm a huge fan of the horror genre, so I always enjoyed playing DS with all the lights turned off, and my headset on. I'm currently working on playing through the originals again, until I pick up the remaster and can finally play it. I love the aesthetics and the story and whatnot, and have always loved that the enemies/combat are different from the norm. Most games are all about headshots, but DS is about dismemberment, Lmao. Plus, the Plasma Cutter? I mean, c'mon!! Probably my favorite weapon in any game I've ever played! Definitely up there with the BR from Halo 3, for me.

Once I do have a chance to play this one, I'll try to remember to come back and give my take, but I fully expect to love it, just as with the original, based on everything I've seen about it

It is hard to explain sometimes that you cannot have all the lights on, sound off etc. Like Amnesia, you need the sound on, and you need the lights off. Dead Space hit it big in the original because it had those crazy jump scares and you had no idea where it was coming from for a few seconds and then you slightly panicked and tried to blast off limbs but your plasma cutter was not turned the right way so it took you longer to kill them.

The combat was nice for myself. I was used to playing more action(ish) type games where you just run around smashing and shooting everything. Going from that to this was odd at first but then you couldn't stop playing it.

I know what you mean about the lights off bit, like even in chapter one when changing/ shutting down circuit breakers. At very first I didn't like it either, I mean, literally could see next to nothing!

But I'm old (in my 50s) so quickly adapted to it.

I believe the jump scares, but especially leaving you "blind," doesn't really happen in 2023. People playing it for the first time, or someone in their 20s that may be fine, but it could be off putting and take a while to get used to that kind of thing.

It's interesting because just as much, or more, as tech has changed from 2008 to now, so have these "small," things. Seeing as Deadspace 2008 is still very viable graphically 15 years later, the way the game proceeds - sorry can't explain - but I haven't played a modern game that uses these kind of technics and more. Times change.

I have no preference, and am quite happy to move with the times. Mmmm...come to think of it if I didn't move with the times there would be nothing to play! I'd have to replay my games from that era,.

Forgot, it's not a sudden change, and I had never noticed it. But when the same game is properly remastered and doesn't cater to the "modern methods, " what ever that means, ha,. It becomes

    clear. Interesting,

@GawgPorkChop I have to turn my brightness up a bit, when I play Dead Space, so I can see better in the darker environment. I tend to play with my brightness a little higher than "suggested" on most games, mainly because I like to be able to see in the dark corners and shadows and whatnot.

You're spot on about the original from 2008. I am currently playing through it again, and it still looks amazing to me. I cant wait to play this new version, but I'm not mad at the original, in any capacity!

I recently replayed the original to hype myself up for the remake and was pleasantly surprised how well it held up. That said, I'm glad the team took the time to make some quality of life changes based on feedback.

Crazy to think of certain technical limitations they were able to work around then

I watched a lot of their streams. They showed off a lot of technical things that they had to change, how they compared to the original one, and what it took to overcome those. It was really cool to see the backend of how they did these that we normally do not see happen.
