Dead Space Remake Won't Launch

bought dead space on steam PC.  Tried multiple times to launch the game, and it does not launch.  I get no crash report, no error window, it simply doesn't launch.  I've checked the system requirements and my laptop exceeds them, i have almost 10gb free storage space, my hard drive is solid state drive as recommended.  i'm not sure what to try next, as i've already completely uninstalled, rebooted, and reinstalled both steam and dead space and still getting the same error.

@Superkaifas Thank you. So I took a look at your system, and I can quite a few errors with Windows and different programs along with memory leaks as well. I would first recommend uninstalling the game, and then going through the following steps to update and repair your system.

Check for Windows and GPU updates - For this do a fresh install of your GPU drivers so it deletes old and installs new. Then make sure all of Windows and optional drivers are updated.

Install/Repair your VC++ files for the game (Microsoft VC++ Link) You may have done this but repairing them would not hurt.

    Delete Windows Temp Files

    • First, make sure you close as many programs as you can
    • Press the Windows key + R, go into the file explorer
    • Type in %temp%, and hit Enter
    • Delete everything it allows you to delete
    • Reboot the PC

    Optional Registry clean-up

    • install CCleaner (it's free) from here
    • Run Registry cleaner
    • Click review selected issues
    • Do you want to back up? No
    • Click Fix all selected issues

Run the System File Checker tool - You want to repair Windows and your SSD, so run both.

After that, reboot and install the game again.

If this does not work, run through the following:

  • I can't launch Dead Space 2023 via Steam.
I don't have the game in EA app, it doesn't require it when launching, and I can't buy it. I bought this copy for 60 dollars, I don't have 30 more for another copy in another app.

It shows up in Task Manager for a second, disappears, then blinks again and disappears for good.

No window launch, no sounds, nothing. Game never really gets launched.

The game was successfully launched on this same device a year ago, last time in March 2023.

    1. Windows 10, updated.
    2. NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060, updated to the latest, 560.81.
    3. VC++ files are updated.
    4. I cleaned the registry, the Steam download cache, deleted temporary files, run System File Checker, didn't help.
    5. I tried Clean Boot, didn't help.
    6. Game reinstalled, verified, didn't help.
    7. Disabling Steam/EA overlays didn't help.
    8. Disabling anti-virus didn't help.
    9. Changing game resolution via Steam / NVidia Geforce / Changing my monitor resolution didn't help.
    10. Launching as admin / in compatibility didn't help.
    11. The game on SSD. It's an internal SSD. I don't have any external SSD.
    12. I can launch other Dead Spaces and other EEA games of the similar requirements just fine, like Star Wars Squadrons worked just fine.

Doing all of this at once also didn't help.

I never saw anything like that. There are no error messages, no additional errors, no fail states, it just never launches.

I don't know what could have caused this at all. I have been through a lot of PC-gaming, but this is somewhat new.

Can you check the following for me? What it sounds like is Windows or a program is blocking it. Sometimes though the Windows approve message does not get checked when launching a program and is missed not allowing the game to launch or stay loading.

    • Add an exclusion
Go to Start, then Settings, then Update & Security, then Windows Security, then Virus & Threat Protection. Under Virus & threat protection settings, select Manage settings, then Add or remove exclusions.

    • Unblock a program in Windows Defender Firewall
Go to Start, then type Firewall, then select Windows Defender Firewall. In the left pane, select Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall. If the program isn't listed, select Allow another app.

There is a lot of good advice on here, and EA Comm Managers have been as helpful as they can.

Now, at the risk of annoying the EA Managers, I am going to re-state one thing that I have posted countless times,

    for different games.

Guys, MANY problems can be solved by sticking to ONE launcher - the one that owns the games licence rights.

I adopted this policy close to three years ago. Typical example. Find a game I want on Steam. Then notice that it

is an EA game and/or states EA app required.

I log out of Steam, open EA app and purchase dircectly from there. Not only those two. GOG or EPIC whatever, please try

    to stick to ONE platform.

Honestly, since doing this PC gaming has been a pretty seemless enjoyable experience. I don't get game errors anymore, and on the rare occasion I do, it turns out to be either my fault or a know bug with the game. But both of these things (luckily?) haven't happened for over two years now. Happy gamer here!!

Nothing is perfect and problems will alway happen. But they can me hugely reduced by simplfying the launch process. One launcher - for one game. Period.

By using two different launchers, just to get to the game it adds a multitude of on-for-seen potential, and very real errors. None of these platforms are particularly fond of each other,

and certainly were not designed to  work with other competitors platforms. I feel it was just kind of slapped on, and none of these companies have any special reason to make their platform work well with a competitors platform. And why would they?

All sorts of crazy stuff can happen. Quite literally, from firewall, to failed logons, looping launcher code, "you need to purchase this game to play," plus about 55834 other issues - give or take. And several billion undocumented potential errors. Yes I am being sarcastic with those numbers, but seriously so much can go wrong.

It's happened to me, or rather it did.

No problem using a load of launchers. Sadly using two (or even just having two open at the same time) for one game throws uncountable spanners in the works.

Using only one (usually the publishers) launcher with any one game, lowers blood pressure, and improves "quality of life," according to several double blind placebo control mass studies; preliminary results have shown. Of course these studies take years, but already one famous cardiologist, who also happens to be an avid gamer, stated on the condidtion of anonymity that using multiple launchers for single games appears to have similar detrimental health effects as "a moderate smoker, who doesn't game, and/or uses only one launcher per game."

He refused to answer further questions, and stressed the studies are on going. However this cutting edge research has already shown clear correlations.

It may well all turn out to be much a do about nothing, these studies take decades, but in the meantime it's probably a good idea to avoid the stresses of multiple launchers running at the same time.

  • In my case it was a case of a missing dll file, specifically

    MFPLAT.DLL

It's possible to verify if it's also the cause of problems for you by running Dead Space.exe from a command line (cmd.exe). It will immediately spit out this missing file error, a tiny window that seemingly gets suppressed when starting via Steam. Getting to that exe in cmd.exe is a bit complicated if you have never done that before, but it's doable.

Anyway, here's the link to the missing DLL, but make sure you download the 64 bit version of that dll ("Architecture 64" on that page) and put it into the game's main folder (you can use Steam to "Browse game files" and that will open the necessary folder): https://www.dll-files.com/mfplat.dll.html

And as a bonus, for those who can't start Dead Space 2023 in Linux via Steam, all you have to do is go to the game's properties in Steam and select a different version of Proton. I tried Proton version 7 and it started up just fine, while it doesn't start on the latest version at all, similar to Windows. You don't need to download any dlls, just change that version.

Great post Gpaa1. I haven't had any issues, but I've bookmarked your post about MFPLAT.DLL just in case.

Do you work in tech?, or just a mega enthusiast?

  • I found this and for absurd as it seems it worked for me!

Press Windows key + R to open up a Run dialog box. Next, type ‘regedit’ and press Ctrl + Shift + Enter to open up the Registry Editor with admin access.
    Opening up the Registry Editor
When you’re prompted by the User Account Control, click Yes to grant admin access.
Once you’re inside the Registry Editor, use the left-hand side menu to navigate to the following location:
    HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Cryptography\
Note: You can either get here instantly by pasting the location directly into the nav bar at the top or you can manually double-click each Registry entry.
Once you arrive inside the correct location, move over to the right-hand menu and right-click on machineGUID .
Next, click on Modify from the context menu that just appeared.
    Editing the MachineGUID string
Next, replace the value of the MachineGuid string with the following and click Ok to save the changes:
