[Discussion] Potential Updates For Romancing?

Given the responses here and on Reddit, I don’t think it’s controversial to say the romances are not living up to what we were advertised. “The most romantic Dragon Age” this is most certainly not. The entirety of each romance arc is roughly twenty minutes, with characters like Lucanis spending most of that not responding to flirts at all. Not “responding awkwardly”, like Cullen rubbing his neck or shuffling before continuing to speak, I mean not responding AT ALL.

Is there any chance patches could come in and save this? BG3 and Cyberpunk both had multiple patches that fleshed out their romantic interactions. It’s already been said we’re not getting DLC, but what kind of patches can we expect going forward?

On the off chance the patches will be more substantial than bug fixes, I’d like to offer a few that could help turn the game around for me, at least. I’ll be upfront that I’m mostly talking from the perspective of someone who has only gone through Lucanis’ romance and has been jaded by the time sink required for a really lackluster experience.

  • The “missives” system is right there for some low-effort lore drops. Maybe an interactive love note to carry through the game?
  • Lucanis’ commitment scene is genuinely awful. It felt like the equivalent of putting on the marriage amulet in Skyrim. It was literally just hitting the “committed—on” switch. It is the least satisfying “romance” scene I have ever experienced. They don’t touch. They hardly even gesture. They just stand there staring at each other and cycling through what looks to be idle animations. Was there cut content meant to be here, or is this genuinely the effort put into the “most romantic game ever”? Is it possible to fiddle with some scenes to make them the smallest bit dynamic?
  • And finally, could we get a patch to allow the players to turn off the flirting between companions? It’s a real kick in the head to hear the effort put into two companions getting together, knowing how little romantic content Rook gets to experience themselves. Especially in the case of Neve and Lucanis, where Lucanis is seemingly the one companion that can be locked out of a romance entirely—and then he immediately hooks up with the person who made the exact. same. call. There’s even a line in his Inner Demons quest about being into Neve, it’s relentless and it’s insulting. I’d rather just not even hear it.

Obviously there’s bigger gripes about the romances—why only twenty minutes of content? why can’t we talk to them between missions? why no kiss button?—but I feel like this is a few relatively small adjustments that could help ease some of the ick. Maybe others have more, better ideas, I don’t want to write a whole book and a half.

Additional:

  • Adding an option to object to Rook being referred to as “young”  in Emmerich’s romance to allow for more RP potential.

I also finished my first run (maybe my only) romancing Davrin and from what I've seen/read, it may be a tad bit above others (particularly Lucanis), but still VERY VERY lacking!

And I agree it was very unemotional when Davrin "professed" his love for my Rook.  At least it happened, though.  The thing that ticked me off the most was at the end they didn't even have Rook and Davrin standing on the same side, or preferably next to each other, in the lineup of The Veilguard.  And no Epilogue either?

On top of it all, these lame-ss romance scenes with no nudity, when a nudity option is available in settings, is also pathetic.  Each character has their own complete nude texture assets in the files - why are they not used in the game?  Just so modders will find them and fix what they didn't want to do themselves?

There are so many things that make absolutely no sense about this game that it is maddening.  I really want to write a "reply" to their Launch Letter and post it here, but I probably shouldn't.

My last and likely final complete playthrough I went ahead and chose a Lavellan for the Inquisitor, not sure if the default chooses all the "good" options, but for that Lavellan I did, and I agree, it's the absolute perfect ending to that story if you did a Lavellan playthrough.

Every single one of my playthroughs (of which there were MANY) was as a female Trevelyan, alternating between Josephine and Sera and halfway through Cullen (couldn't finish it, not because it wasn't good, just really not my thing), so I never experienced that particular romance, but even as someone who didn't even get to see her own Inquisitor in the game I was hoping for what happened and was relieved when, this, at LEAST, was delivered for those two.

Felt like a good place to end my love affair with Dragon Age, all the stories I might have cared about have either been trashed entirely (Like Hero\Leliana, Champion\Isabela, and now my Inquisitor didn't really existed because my headcanon is Lavellan).

Don't even know what happened to Rook, if she did indeed get that cottage in Ferelden, and frankly,  I don't really even care. Very sad.

The NPCs are pan/bi as I understand it which makes Neve and Lucanis getting together a completely reasonable possibility without it being some kind of 'they actually r straight' agenda on BioWare's part.

We've had multiple, intentionally straight characters in these games, like Morrigan/Cullen/Cassandra etc. Whatever issues Veilguard has, 'secretly straight companions' isn't one of them.

Calling for people to get fired/removed because you don't like something about a video game is pathetic, childish and offers nothing constructive to the discussion. It's not that serious.

    A figure of speech!

This entire board is pathetic, childish, and non-constructive by your definition, as nothing here will any effect on anything.

And this is not a board of directors making that call.  It's a board of discussion and observation; last I checked.

I imagine sales results of the game will have the greatest impact on those placed on specific projects.

Just bumping this to ask if there has been any news whatsoever about the possibility of a romance patch? The romance is literally the only thing that I find unsatisfactory about Veilguard, having gotten used to really great romances in the previous DA games.

I agree with you 100%. I'm good with everything else in the game, except the romances are terrible. Some are okay to a point, but they are all lacking immensely!

They've been pretty clear that there will be no dlc, and they haven't said a thing about any kind of content patch. Honestly, the more I play the more frustrated I get because I can see all the places where it feels like they just...stopped working on things.  Not being able to have extended conversations with companions or even respond to them in the Lighthouse makes Rook feel completely disconnected and it is very un-immersive. This is the first time I've ever felt played a DA game where I felt the protag was alienated from their own companions.

I really think they GoT Season 8'd Dragon Age fans...they decided they'd rather work on Mass Effect 4 so they just didn't give us proper companion interactions, relationships, romances or even the end of the game.  It just ends and that's it.  To me it shows that they don't care about us. I don't give a single **bleep** about Mass Effect...I hope ME gets the same treatment that DA got.

Agreed. Bioaware cares little for the fans.

Yes that was a similar line to one Solas says early in the game.

And BioWare needs to remember another line they write on the game ...

A good leader isn't someone who never makes a mistake, but someone who admits when they make one!

The biggest thing I believe BioWare needs to keep in mind in that the sales for this game have been disappointing - for good reason - and even though they want to put all efforts on ME5 now, this doesn't leave anything in the minds of buyers and fans to trust they will even do ME5 right!

So I'm not buying it when it is released.
