Photo Mode Causes Washed-out Images With HDR Enabled

Using the in game photo mode to take images produces a washed out and overexposed image (002).

When I disable HDR in the display settings, the image comes out significantly better (003).

I see something close to (003) with HDR enabled. Disabling HDR in game means everything is super saturated aside from screenshots.

Is there a fix for this coming soon please?

@abc2034444136 Thank you for the reply on this. Sadly, we cannot go by Reddit posts since we are not on Reddit. We need players to post here through their EA account. That way, we can send that over to the team and let them know. It may have fixed it for one and not the other. Every PC is different so mine may look very different than yours. Also, when you take into account the types of monitors being used with GPUs being used. It isn't as simple as it's fixed for everyone. As per the patch notes, it was addressed. If, for some reason, it did not for the masses, we need those players posting here or on the new EA forums so that we can gather that data.

    Thanks.

  • yep Im having the same exact issue as OP. With HDR on photomode pictures become washed out but without HDR they look how they should.

@ValentenX Thanks for the images. Has this been cleared up for you? Have you performed any steps to see if they help with the platform you are on?

@MadRamblings Which platform are you on? Can you attach images of before and after if possible?

Hey there @EA_Shepard  it was actually MadRamblings who added the photos in the above post. I have added my examples with this post as well as a dxdiag for system information. I am on PC for what it is worth.

Im not quite sure what steps to try to fix this to be quite honest. I have tried turning hdr off and on restarting the game changing from borderless full screen to full screen and back. It still has the same issue. This feels like some kind of bug with the games photomode and its interaction with HDR. For what its worth even when i just use the windows snip or w/e its called on windows 11 with shift+windows key+s I have the same issue. This is the only game I've had this happen with so I can only imagine its how this game handles HDR.

  • Hi @EA_Shepard I'm on PC as well.

to me it seams to be a combination on how the HDR setting in game and the full screen/borderless windowed modes interact.

    Basic Specs:

    • OS = Windows 11
    • Graphics card = Nvidia GForce RTX 4070
    • Monitor =  Philips 32M1N5800A (has HDR)
    • X-box controller

    If I take a screenshot:

    1. Using Veilguard Photo mode, HDR on, Borderless Windowed, in game "Take Photo" button
      1. in person looks normal
      2. saved image is super de-saturated
    2. In Veilguard Photo mode, HDR on, Borderless Windowed, using x-box controller screenshot button
      1. in person looks normal
      2. saved image looks the same as in personl
    3. In Veilguard Photo mode, HDR on, Borderless Windowed, Steam screenshot button
      1. in person looks normal
      2. saved image looks the same as in person
    4. Using Veilguard Photo mode, HDR on, Full screen, in game "Take Photo" button
      1. in person looks normal
      2. saved image is super de-saturated
    5. In Veilguard Photo mode, HDR on, Full screen, using x-box controller screenshot button
      1. in person looks normal
      2. saved image looks the same as in person
    6. In Veilguard Photo mode, HDR on, Full screen, Steam screenshot button
      1. in person looks normal
      2. saved image looks the same as in person
    7. Using Veilguard Photo mode, HDR off, Borderless Windowed, in game "Take Photo" button
      1. in person looks duller
      2. saved image is the same as in person
    8. In Veilguard Photo mode, HDR off, Borderless Windowed, using x-box controller screenshot button
      1. in person looks duller
      2. saved image looks slightly more saturated
    9. In Veilguard Photo mode, HDR off, Borderless Windowed, Steam screenshot button
      1. in person looks duller
      2. saved image looks the same as in person
    10. Using Veilguard Photo mode, HDR off, Full screen, in game "Take Photo" button
      1. in person looks Super saturated
      2. saved image is slightly duller than normal
    11. In Veilguard Photo mode, HDR off, Full screen, using x-box controller screenshot button
      1. in person looks Super saturated
      2. saved image looks normal
    12. In Veilguard Photo mode, HDR off, Full screen, Steam screenshot button
      1. in person looks Super saturated

@MadRamblings Thanks for all the info on this one. Had a couple of discussions about it and sent it on over to the team for review!

  • Did you ever find a fix for this? I'm on PC, but having the same issues. The only way I can get photo mode to take a good picture is to turn HDR off. Incredibly annoying to have to go into settings every time I want to take a photo.

@abc2034444136 There were some issues with photo mode resolved in Patch 4. Depending on your platform there are some ways to test it though. Most would be

    Repairing the game

    Reinstalling the game

Creating new characters to test it

Loading the game on a different PC or console to test your specific saves

    Quality of Life Changes:

    • In Patch 3, we introduced a line on screen showing where a Photo Mode screenshot was saved. In Patch 4, we are reverting that change due to a safety concern brought to us by some content creators. PC players can find their Photo Mode screenshots in
    • Fixed an issue with Photo Mode screenshots appearing slightly blurry for some players.
    • Fixed an issue where taking a screenshot with the space bar in Photo Mode also toggled the highlighted setting at the same time. (PC Only)
  • The recent patch did not fix the HDR/photo mode issue. None of the "fixes" listed below help. The only solve is to turn HDR off every time you want to take a photo, but the quality of the photo suffers. So it's either keep HDR on and have really blown out highlights and super dark shadows, or turn HDR off and have dull photos with no contrast and a lack of color. There are plenty of forum/Reddit posts about the issue, so I know it is still occurring for many.
