Crackling sound making it unplayable

Title screen, Varric doing his monologue and character creation all play sound with no problem but the second I got to the first cutscene with my rook and then into Mintrathous the sound is constantly crackling and cutting out.
Have tried every possible audio setting in game and updated drivers.
(On windows 10)

  • Same issues here as well, I’m glad it’s not just me. Game is basically unplayable with the sound issues, it’s so bad

  • This doesn't help but I've got the same issue too. It's a real shame it makes all the hard work put into cutscenes music and dialogue worthless because you can't hear it

  • Same issue on Windows 11... game runs fine but the audio crackling has made it unbearable to play, only happens during certain areas / missions too

I don't know if it helps but I have an Nvidia Geforce card and I saw someone on Reddit saying that the new drivers for it (which were ironically designed for Veilguard) can cause the issues that we're all experiencing.

I've installed a previous driver and I'm currently loading the game up and going through the looooong shader compilation again.

I'll let you all know if this actually fixes anything for me, but if you want to try it yourself it's an option.

Trip report: I tried rolling back to a previous Nvidia driver and unfortunately I'm still getting the exact same issue.

At a bit of a loss here as to what else to try. Nothing is fixing this. Might be reliant on Bioware at this point.

No Audioproblem with Windows 11. Maybe the issue is only with Windows 10?

Did u update your DirectX12? Maybe the Bug hiding there somewhere..

    Uuuh. Possible Solution

Change Sound Settings to 16 Bit 44100 Hz CD-Quality

I have tried 16 bit 44100 hz quality and that didn't resolve the issue unfortunately. It makes it a little less noticeable but doesn't fix it at all. It's probably just less noticeably because you're lowering the audio quality on your pc, but it's definitely still there.

As far as Directx12 goes...I do have the latest version of Directx12. Directx is updated via Windows Update so probably most people reading this thread that have this issue have an updated version of windows.

I am on Windows10 but the minimum requirements for the game have Windows 10 listed as an option so if this game is unplayable on Windows 10 then someone screwed up somewhere.

  • The only thing that fixed the stuttering was to turn on vsync and set that to 1/2. Unfortunately, that also locks fps to 30… which may be a dealbreaker for some.

However, since doing that, my audio seems to be 99% crackle free. No idea what might be causing this issue or why that fixed it.

I tried that as well and it also didn't seem to resolve anything for me. :(

Okay, so I think I’m noticing a pattern. I think the audio stuttering has something to do with npcs — its the worst when in cities, and gone when in story mission environments. Maybe it’s something to do with CPU load?

  • I am having the same issue - tried all of the above but nothing is working. I guess I will wait for a patch to hopefully fix before playing.

  • Also experiencing the same issue - not an issue in any other game or app and none of the suggested fixes works. Clearly an issue with the game.
