Game Constantly Switching from Controller to Keyboard Controls

Experienced the same thing at pretty much the exact same time after my computer updated to Windows 11 24H2. I was able to fix it on my end. Here's what I tried: 

X - Updating Xbox controller firmware: updated but didn't fix issue

X - Checked game file integrity: no errors 

X - Checked steam updates: none available

X - Changed controller settings by going to the games properties section in steam (click manage > properties > controller). Switched "Override for dragon age veilguard" from "use default settings" to "enable steam input": error occurred instantly after opening dragon age

✓ - Did the step above, but switched it to "disable steam input": fixed

Same for me but with Nintendo Pro controller. I stopped playing the game. Also tried everything, and the controller doesnt even want to connect with the game when I disable steam input. 

All my other games in steam work with the controller just fine. Controller stopped working with the game after patch 4. 

I don't have an cbox controller to try, but its happening with my ps4 snd nintendo contoller so i don't think it's the hardware.

All my steam settings we're already set to the disable overlay, but I'll try the the override, mine is set to default right now

Rosie_the_Rogue Can you go into the game and reset all the settings to the default settings and then try again? Sometimes, this helps when launching the game; the system will recognize the hardware if it isn't a normal Xbox controller.

EDIT: this fix worked for me for about four days. I looked the problem up again but more general as a Windows + controller problem. Many people believe it to be caused by the new Windows update from november (also when the problems began). I've uninstalled that updat 'something "24H" something'-update. Knocks on wood so far, I've been playing without any problems.

I'm having the exact same problem as op since the patch. Disabling steam input doesn't work and I haven't been able to continue playing it because playing with mouse and keyboard is too weird - I can't check the dialogue option before choosing them and I play the game for the story.

Impossible to play with a controller anymore cause when the prompts change the controller works otherwise except for combat skills. Going to "save game", choosing a save file and pressing any key switches the prompts back to controller ones for a few minutes untill I have to do the same thing again cause they switch back to keyboard prompts. This happens in every fight and I have to finish the fights without being able to use any skills.

noppali Are you playing it through Steam? I take it from your message you are. Which controller are you trying to use? 

Is it wired or wired in?
How many devices do you have plugged into your PC?

I know this might not be the best solution since it cost money but are you using DSX? I have it running when playing any PC games it might fix your issue.
