Game is constantly crashing to desktop and crashing steam

I've seen people with similar complaints but I've yet to see anyone with a solution. At this point, I'm convinced it's an issue with the actual game and the only way for the crashes to stop is for Bioware to release a patch and address the issue.

The game originally ran fine for me but 2 days after release the game just started randomly crashing to desktop. No error or anything. It also crashes steam as well and I am unable to relaunch steam or any other app, instead I get the message, "this app is unable to run on your PC." Everything is fixed once I restart my PC. At this point, the game crashes anywhere from 1 min in to maybe 30 mins, on medium settings if I'm lucky, and maybe 10 mins max on high settings. The game used to run perfectly for me on high settings with no issues on release.

I have an AMD graphics card and CPU that are above the recommended requirements. I have tried playing this game on steam deck and while the FPS sucks and I have to use low settings, there are no crashes.

I have tried everything including:

  • uninstalling and reinstalling the game
  • verifying game files
  • both deleting shader cache and restoring it
  • uninstalling and reinstalling steam
  • updating my graphic drivers and chipset
  • updating my BIOS
  • resetting my BIOS settings to default
  • both enabling and disabling XMP
  • completely uninstalling and reinstalling windows
  • enabling DLSS
  • lowering game settings and turning off hair stand

...and more that I probably can't even remember right now. I have spent hours trying to find a fix. At this point I don't even expect anyone to have a solution but I'm making this post so EA and Bioware are aware of this constant, random crashing that is making the game that I spent $80 on unplayable.

Agreed...it's really quite insane that there's been no "official" response.  I installed first a few days after release.

I spent about an hour creating my Rook and Inquisitor, then played the actual game for about 30 minutes before it crashed.  Didn't think anything of it...until I could essentially no longer launch the game.  I can uninstall, reinstall, get shaders verified, and attempt to load saves, but the game crashes before the save fully loads.  After each crash, I can attempt to start the game again, and it seems to begin loading...but simply crashes back to desktop.

I've tried a few minor fixes, but nothing "drastic" outside of updating my BIOS.  In reality, that shouldn't be necessary at all.  I'm not going to make wholesale changes to my setup in order to play the game.  It's ridiculous.

  • You're definitely not alone. Many people can't play the game due to constant crashing, including me. My rig has a GTX 4090, i9 processor, and 32gb of memory. Veilguard was running perfectly with all settings on ultra with 120 fps UNTIL the first patch. Now, like you're experiencing, it crashes within minutes of loading in. So, I urge you and everyone else to stop tweaking your setups, software, and hardware. It's not your computer, it's the game.

And it's absolutely unacceptable that EA/Bioware hasn't said so much as a peep since the forums started blowing up about the issue. I've pretty much put the game down. Can't return it since, after six days of unobstructed gameplay, I've got 80 hours in. I was on the fence about buying the game after what happened with Andromeda, and I should've listened to my gut. I want to play Veilguard, but it's so broken that it's impossible to enjoy.
