I’m playing Veilguard on PS5, and I have a medium blonde preset hair color. It changes constantly depending on the lighting (despite looking fine in the different lighting options of character creati...
Hi everyone! Thanks so much for letting us know about this issue. I really appreciate your feedback and will make sure to share it with the team so they can look into it. To help us get to the bottom of this, could you please provide a few more details? Thank you!
Hair designed to be white appears black in certain lighting.
Hair was set to the Bottom Left Gray/White one, brightness turned all the way up, saturation turned all the way down. It looks white in cut scenes but gray or black everywhere else, especially in Bellara's room.
This is probably an issue with how the reflections and shadowing of 'Stranded Hair' is handled in the engine. When direct lighting and light reflections from the game environment hits the hair, each strand of hair begins to reflect the light onto every other strand. Since a reflection is, in effect, considered a light source of it's own, it starts a chain reaction where every strand has to respond by casting shadows onto every other strand, virtually simultaneously.
Light colored hair is more chromatic and reflects more light, but since the hair strands are so close together, the amount of shadows being created tend to overpower the reflection, making the hair appear darker than it should. Even in direct contact with very strong light sources like the sun, you will likely see a darker shade than what you expected. Lower light conditions, like entering the shade in an otherwise sunny scene, will still trigger the reflections and because of the extra chromatic nature of light hair, subsequently also start the chain reaction of casting a lot of shadows, making the hair appear very dark brown/grey or even black since the light source is less bright and won't cast as strong a reflection to combat the shadows as direct sunlight would. Darker hair colors tend to experience less of this effect since they are less chromatic and don't reflect light as easily, as well as not being so obvious in contrast when it does happen.
Summary of issue: White hair consistently turns black outside of character creation and cutscenes. In bright light zones of the game, her hair turns completely black. I've also noticed it darkens her complexion tone as well as you can see in the picture. This is regardless of what direction she is facing to "sun" light source.
Hair settings: Strands on. When strands are turned off, they hold the true color of white. Turning strands back on reverts to the problem. Light settings seem to be required to be set at high in order for strands button to be available. Upon trying different light, shadow and ray tracing settings does not appear to fix the problem.

By the way, thank you very much for the explanation. It helps knowing our posts are being read. I absolutely love this game and I'm at 51 hours. I have experienced absolutely no bugs other than this one, a rarity in recent new game releases. Not to bad mouth BG3, but Act 3 was unplayable for me at launch because of bug situations. This game is the most polished I've experienced in recent times.

Heartily agree about the lack of bugs. This (hair color issue) is the only one I’ve noticed, apart from a save deleting itself whilst saving twice now (I have other saves thankfully, but that was a bit concerning!).
Hello! I am OP, please see screen shots attached there.

Summary of issue: Hair color does not stay consistent. During cutscenes it is mostly correct, but gameplay (in all locations aside from the Lighthouse) it ranges from black to dark honey brown hair color, depending on lighting of environment. Hair should be a shade of blonde. Strangely, hair color is correct 100% at the Lighthouse.
Hair settings: Sixth blonde choice from left of top row in hair color selection, saturation 50% brightness 75%
My characters hair is almost black when in game no matter the lights but in creation she was a light blonde. even in cut scene she appears to be a very dark blonde.
I don’t know how to add pictures in here but if u contact me by email I can provide various pics or videos.
Summary of Issue: Setting Rook's hair to a light color (such as white or light blonde) and turning on "Strand Hair" under geometry in the graphics settings causes Rook's hair to wildly vary in color based on lighting. It can go from basically white to nearly black depending on where Rook is standing. The color does not do this when "Strand Hair" is turned off.
Hair Settings: Right-most color swatch on the 2nd row of hair colors (light brown) set to 15% Saturation & 85% Brightness.
In what I think is a related issue, in certain lighting, dark hair turns bright, almost white, depending on the angle.

Hair doesn't handle light and shadow correctly in certain conditions and for certain hair colours.
Light hair looks very dark in low light; this happens with the player and with NPCs, e.g., Taash who has almost white hair on the character sheet, is very dark grey indoors.
In certain lighting, dark hair turns bright blonde depending on the camera angle.
Graphic settings are set to medium, with strand hair, High texture filtering and LOD, and selective ray tracing. (Because High textures cause sound crackling, which is a whole other issue.)
Attached: screenshots of Taash inside at the Warden Fort (dark hair) and on the character screen (white hair); screenshots of Antoine and Evka 1-2 seconds apart during a conversation at Hossberg before the Siege.
