Lucanis romance bug after Act 1 decision

Because it's DEFINITELY a bug that lucanis is perma-locked out of romance if you don't save Treviso, while you get to still romance neve eventually for the EQUAL and opposite decision? Especially while not telling us so, with text simply saying that growing the relationship will progress slower after being hardened (the SAME thing it says for neve's romance, which is still possible while lucanis' isn't as far as anyone has been able to discover)

EA wouldn't punish one of the romance options that would be predominantly chosen by women while most male players get to save a city AND get the girl. As well as having a romance that completely locks you out of the best ending if you pursue it, when NO OTHER companion romance is tethered to a big plot decision like that.

  • Yeah, after this and many other disappointments I've been having and reading about, I've uninstalled the game. Wish I could return it tbh. I think I'm done giving Bioware the benefit of the doubt. Feel sorry for anyone who's as sad about all this as I am.

This still didnt answer as to why people are being permalocked out of his romance.

You said the quest isn’t bugged but still didn’t answer why people are locked out of his Hero status or romance. if one of his quests it isn’t being marked as complete and Treviso was saved, why are people still being locked out.

Plus if saving Minrathous also locks you out of his romance and not Neve’s how is that fair? Now if it worked both ways I could understand but it doesn’t. Plus I’ve heard you can’t even get the best ending if you don’t choose Minrathous. Which potentially locks everyone out completely if you want to romance Lucanis.

It’s either Save Treviso and the game doesn’t bug and you might get the Lucanis romance to work but you’re locked out of the best ending. OR you save Minrathous but are completely locked out of Lucanis’ romance of it isn’t already bugged but not Neve’s.

That’s my thread you’re referencing and even there a clear answer is not given.

tying a romance (of a fan favorite, no less) with a worse ending is honestly insane.

This… hardly answers the question. Please let players know if this is an intentional consequence to the act 1 choice and if it was meant to be a temporary lock until trust is regained, or a permanent lock no matter if trust is regained or not. This is very frustrating and confusing and this more or less lack of an answer doesn’t help clear things up

Hi! Thank you for your reply, however I'm not seeing more info on this particular problem, only that Lucanis' introduction quest is not bugged and not supposed to show up in the quest journal.

We were wanting to know if the player is locked out of Lucanis' romance path if they chose to help Minrathous at the end of A Warden's Best Friend quest? And if so, is it an intended consequence or a bug? Thanks!

  • Yeah I am enjoying the game so far but there is definitely a big issue if Lucanis is locked out of both his romance AND his hero status if you do not save Treviso, while Neve retains full access to hers.

Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s a bug. I was so excited to romance Lucanis and his backstory with Spite was initially very intriguing. However, if he’s going to be mad at my Rook for saving her hometown and refuse any romance with her, but then turn around and romance Neve?!? Yeah, I’m good thanks. I’ll go after a genuine man like Emmrich. I feel like EA gave us a slap in the face with this romance.

  • I’ve been following this discussion across various platforms about Lucanis’s romance being completely locked out if you don’t save Treviso since I found out about it early on post-release. I’m coming in here as someone whose first playthrough had me saving Minrathous instead to confirm that this choice does indeed lock him out of romance completely. And I’m also coming in here as someone whose second playthrough (and probably every one after this as a result) had me saving Treviso to confirm that the same lock out does NOT occur with Neve.

It still makes zero sense to me that BioWare would program it so that one of the romanceable companions gets permanently cut out of possible romances at all for the rest of the game because of a specific very early game decision, and yet the same thing does not happen to the other character affected by said same choice either way you choose.

The way I see it is, if you lock one out, you should lock the other out. Otherwise, do not lock ANYONE out. It does not add anything to the game story, lore, plot, or playability-wise, and only actually removes content. Which is alienating to players.

I originally thought this had to be a bug, but it doesn’t seem like it is the longer post-release goes on that it isn’t patched. It feels like it shouldn’t be a feature. It feels extremely shortsighted. And it sucks, because again, Neve is STILL ABLE TO BE ROMANCED NO MATTER YOUR CHOICE, and Lucanis ISN’T. He will ONLY be romanceable in a save Treviso playthough. Yes, I’m annoyed too.

Right?  There is nothing about those characters that makes me think Lucanis cares more about Treviso than Neve does about Minrathous.

I also never took the "didn't have time for a romance" to be a permanent thing when I ran across it, but I abandoned that first playthrough for different reasons and chose to romance Davrin instead. Still a wafer-thin romance, but at least it works.

BioWare never seems to get these things right (as much as I love both DA and ME franchises), but with all the personal stories and advertisements of create the hero you want to be, or however they worded it, Veilguard is remarkably thin on choices.

      This decision seems .... dumb.

Fully agree. It's not even good character development/exploration, because the writing doesn't hold up in terms of why this would be the case for him but not for Neve. It almost feels like the old "well, women forgive easier", despite her being very involved with her city. Not to mention he'll cut off romance with a SD Rook and then still romance Neve, just to really spit on the player's face. How does that make sense? Lock neither, lock both or, at the very least, lock the background romance if the player is locked out.

They were going on and on about you could romance the companions with any gender and any background, and then basically locked the Lucanis romance for one of the backgrounds, because why the hell would you choose Treviso as SD? Now I have to choose between my roleplay and my romance in this "very romantic" roleplaying game? And his is the only romance that can be locked out? Great. He always seems to get the short end of the stick, huh? Give me hard locks, then, based on background, race, gender, whatever. Don't give me false hope and then compromise my roleplaying in a roleplaying game.

It's giving very much putting character agency before player agency, like they forgot they were making a RPG, not writing a book. And even in terms of character agency, as I said, it does very little, if anything, for the character. A truly baffling decision all around.

Posted this on another thread, but this one is more established. Someone on Reddit posted a screenshot from post-patch that shows after the choice in Act 1 it now says as a branching story notification: “After the blighted dragon attack devastated Treviso, Lucanis no longer has time for a romance with you.”

If anyone else can confirm, so it’s not just that one Reddit post, I’d appreciate it very much.

Took the plunge on the quest today, I can confirm this. Unfortunately. I don't have a screenshot bc it was one of those prompts that flashed very fast, but, yeah. That's it I guess.

I'm not even mad about having to pursue another relationship, but as someone with a Shadow Dragon Rook...if "no time for romance" Lucanis romances Neve after all that, I'm gonna evict them both to the void & also the unfairness of Neve apparently not being locked out?

I’m mad, and I didn’t even choose the “wrong” option. I have absolutely nothing nice to say about this decision… Like, let me turn off background romances, please. I don’t care about watching dev’s ships play out and I am genuinely annoyed that it plays out like this. They flirt from the moment they meet and it’s TRASH. Knowing the double standard happens is just the cherry on top, Lucanis isn’t a ride or die, he’s fickle lmao

I don’t know who/if anyone important reads the boards, but I hope it’s clear that this is an awful, sucky decision. Almost everything about Lucanis feels like they didn’t want you to romance him, but especially this. There’s only three men to romance, and one of them can get locked out (not one of the women though, can’t do that!), and that lockout makes him unavoidably hook up with the only other person that made the exact same choice that locks the player out? Seriously? And that’s not even getting into what a catty thing that would be for Neve to do. What kind of “found family” story is this that she’s just like “Well…if he doesn’t want you, it’s free real estate?”

Awful, nonsensical decision, from both a narrative and a meta perspective.

Just got to this point of the game as of 8:30PM, 11/8/24:  Yes, it does say "Lucanis no longer has time for a romance with you," if you choose to save Minrathous.

When I first got that, I assumed it meant he needed a break from the central plot for a moment as he had to stay in Antiva and rebuild. Then when I Googled the situation, I had no idea I was permalocked from pursuing him further and found this thread. Feels bad man.

  • As far as I can tell, it's because one of his personal quests next never starts because the NPCs involved are dead/blighted because of Treviso's fall. The quest is part of his romance so if you don't have that quest, then you can't lock in his romance.
