[SOLVED]
After my girlfriend struggled to get Sims to run, despite trying all suggested remedies, I accidentally stumbled upon the solution.
The issue was that I had disabled the auto-start of OneDrive on her PC at some point.
When I clicked on OneDrive in the taskbar, a massive amount of data was uploaded/updated. Among these files must have been the one that kept triggering an error message whenever Sims started.
Let OneDrive finish uploading the data, and the problem should be resolved.
Hope this helps some of you... maybe not just with Sims 4.
Cheers and happy gaming!

I'm glad that the one drive thing worked for you, but that didn't solve my issue. The sims will not download even though I have onedrive running.

did you try to install the game in steam first?

Only 2% and the download does not work for me.
