Games refusing to download in correct folder on EA Desktop. Why?

Product: EA app
Platform:PC
Error Report ID (learn how to create an Error Report ID in the sticky post)
Which client functionality are you experiencing this bug with? Download Game
When did this happen? (dd.mm.yy hh:mm) 04/04/22
Summarize your bug It doesn't matter what I set the install directory to, I cannot install Battlefield V on the drive or in the folder I want it to. It refuses to install anywhere but an EA folder it keeps making on my C drive, which does not have 90GB free space. I have the game through EA Play/XBOX Game Pass.
How often does the bug occur? Every time (100%)
Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? Install BFV in a different directory to default.
What happens when the bug occurs? The game installs on the wrong drive., completely ignoring both the option for default install location and where I tell it to install
What do you expect to see? The ability to install the game on a drive with enough space.

I've tried re-installing the app.

I've tried changing the default directory through the user file.

I've tried to install in a different folder on the drive.

I've tried to re-install the app itself on a different drive but it gave me constant install errors so I couldn't see if that would work.

I've tried changing default install directories on the XBOX app as well as Origin (though Origin doesn't even recognise that I have EA Play so BFV isn't there to try on that app).

I've tried everything I can think of and still no ball. I've run out of ideas besides moving my entire OS onto a bigger SSD which I really don't want to do.

Please help.

  • Attempting to download a game in EA Desktop after changing both app settings for download location and specific game download location (D: Drive). After staring to download it will fail out because it is trying to download to a completely different drive (C🙂 that does not have enough space available in it. I have attempted to cancel and restart the download, Uninstall and reinstall EA Desktop, and even disconnect and reconnect the correct D: Drive. Nothing works so I had to do to Origin and try the same download and that worked perfectly fine.

  • Also quick note, it installed BF1 on the drive that I wanted it to, albeit my other one. Why is BFV different?
  • I have had the same problem and tried all of the mentioned solutions as well. Can't find any fix on youtube/forums why does this exist and please can a manager or some other staff fix this issue. no one uses their C: drive for a game installation come on EA

  • I also tried changing the windows temp directory to a different folder. Did not help.

    Hey all!

It is indeed a known issue for the EA app team that some players are experiencing download issues with the EA app when trying to set a manual install directory for specific games.

The EA app is still in development and therefore it's more common to experience these kinds of odd issues, unfortunately.

    To minimize the chance of experiencing this issue, you can try the following;

    - When setting the manual install directory on a different drive, make sure that the drive has at least twice the amount of free space left than the size of the game that you want to download.

    - Make sure that when you set the manual install directory, it's not tucked away in dozens of folders (so not folder X > folder X > folder X > etc.).
