ingame overlay not loading

Summarize your bug In It Takes Two in-game overlay doesn't load.
How often does the bug occur? Every time (100%)
Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? shift + f1 in game only shows box with a text "Friends & messages" on top
What happens when the bug occurs? Cannot invite friends to play, making the game unplayable.
What do you expect to see? A list of my friends along with an invite button.
I bought It Takes Two from steam a few weeks ago. At first everything worked well. Third time opening the in-game overlay didn't load anymore. I've been trying to fix it for multiple hours, things that haven't worked so far for example are:
- Enabling EA overlay (already enabled and shift + f1 brings up the box)
- Clean boot
- Reinstalling EA app and It Takes Two
- Disabling Nahimic Service
- Clearing EA cache
- Verifying integrity of game files
- Forcing the game run on fullscreen
- Waiting (gave up after 40 mins)
To describe the issue further. I get to the play online option and click on the invite friend. After that a blueish gray box pops up. Here it should load the search bar above a list of my friends. The friendlist nor anything else loads up. If I click off the game and back again, sometimes it loads up more but I'm still left unable to click on the search bar or the box next to my friends name.
It's been like this for over ten days.
