What helped me was performing a "clear cache": https://help.ea.com/en/help/faq/clear-cache-to-fix-problems-with-your-games/
From the EA Desktop app
Select the three dashes in the far-left corner of EA Desktop.
Scroll to Help.
Click App recovery.
Select Clear cache.

Had this problem also, seems to be working now. Ran the EAUpdater.exe found it here:

C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\EA Desktop\EA Desktop

then it worked :-)

UPDATE_1: This only seems to be a temp fix. I had to run the updater again today.

UPDATE_2: Dosnt work now. updater says that its upto date.

UPDATE_3; Had to reinstall the app this time.

  PLEASE be ashamed of yourself and fix this. Every time it's a battle to get a game started because this ridiculous app won't work.

Other proposed solutions like clearing cache did NOT work for me.
