unable to link Game Pass to EA Play

I just got PC GamePass because it included EA Play. In the XBox app, it already shows which EA games I have installed, which I figured meant my accounts were already linked. But they aren't. If I try to link them, it gives me the following error, which doesn't make sense.

I found information about how to unlink an EA account, but that doesn't help because it doesn't show up as being linked to XBox in the first place.

    Hi there @ShinyGeodude 

    If your gamertag is currently linked up to a disabled EA account, you'll need to get in contact with the live support team so they can verify your ownership of this older account and help get your gamertag linked up to a different account that you do have access to instead so you can login online again.

    Please contact live support from the help site here so they can look into this further with you.

    Please contact live support from the help site here so they can look into this further with you.

    Already tried looking for live support through that link, but all I can find are links to articles. I'll click on links that seem to be relevant, but none include an actual link to contact a support rep.

    Under the Game Support section, select EA app as your product, then I need help logging into my account. From there, you'll see the current available contact options.

    That's not exactly a clear path, but ok, thanks for your help. Waiting on a rep now. I don't even remember that old account, so I hope we can figure this out.

    Didn't work. He said I couldn't provide enough accurate information about the account. It was from at least 15 years ago, with an old address and phone number, so how can I be expected to accurately remember it? *sigh* I guess I'll have to cancel that PC Game Pass, create a new XBox account, and link this EA Account to that one.

    edit: And after all that, I managed to get back into the old EA account myself and unlink it, which I should've tried in the first place. 😞
