Will I have to repurchase EA Play for Steam?

I've been an Origin Access Basic (now EA Play) member for a while now, and I hear it is coming to Steam on the 31st. I was wondering if I will have to purchase the subscription separately on Steam, O...

    Hey folks,

    A few things I can answer:

    • EA Play Pro is available exclusively on Origin.
    • We will deliver EA’s subscription service to Steam on August 31.
    • Our membership is available on each platform for $4.99, or regional equivalent. There is no cross platform subscription at this time.

I am a Pro subscriber and feel like I am being ripped off now. I've paid for a full year in advance so cancelling now would be a waste of my money. Now I am stuck with the Origin launcher which is loaded with bugs and errors even when not being actively used. When I first got an email from EA saying they were improving their service I actually thought that the Origin browser was finally getting a fix, not a lousy re-branding so that Valve would be okay with EA subscription service on their launcher. Seems obvious now, that Valve would not likely allow EA to promote their service by keeping the Origin Access name. By not allowing PC users to use their EA Play memberships across Origin/Steam, it just comes across as greedy. I do understand EA not allowing transfer between PS and Xbox but not across platforms that both reside on PC. I realize that EA Play on Origin has more offerings but Steam is a SUPERIOR launcher in every single regard!!! I was really on the fence about resubscribing this year. If I had known about this move prior I would not have bothered doing so. Hope this changes because this time next year if I am still stranded on the crappy Origin launcher I won't subscribe to either.

This isn't entirely down to EA. Valve, Sony and Microsoft all want fees to be paid on their platforms and if EA did a universal EA Play then people could buy EA Play from Origin, play it on all platforms and Sony etc would get nothing from it. If that were the case then none of the platforms would allow EA Play at all.

As for EA Play Pro, well the same applies except EA want you to use Origin, and EA Play Pro is the incentive to use Origin.

    @CarbonCarl Ok so... How come a Microsoft subscription gets me games on my PC and Xbox and yet it's "not possible" for EA to allow you to pay them and choose a launcher for the game.... Considering they are using that launcher to sell the same subscription anyway.... That isn't valve, Sony or anyone else's fault that is EA's marketing team, clawing every penny they can rather then doing something the community as a whole has asked for. And is still questioning their decision on. EA just cannot accept that origin is a failed experiment and whoever pulled the trigger on it and decided it was a good idea is probably sitting in an office with his head hung low trying to think of a way to turn it into a win and this is the outcome 😅 what a joke. When an actual fix and a way to perhaps save face would be to take the time to actually listen to the input of people on these forums rather then copy and paste the same speel over and over.

    Summary - it is possible EA just don't want to do it cause they won't make as much money out of their failed origin store. Remember they made origin to be "exclusive", and "only place for EA" and now they come crawling back to the real world after how many videogame fails... Oh and that whole loot box is gambling thing... Like I said a joke.

    @A1RW0LF9 Microsoft can do that because they own both Windows and Xbox, but you can’t get game pass on Steam, Origin or PSN.
    You only get it all via the Microsoft store.

    IMO EA would make more money from a universal subscription because they wouldn’t have the fees to pay and very few people I’d say have more than one subscription.

    Exactly, a universal subscription for consoles and pc with progress carryover is what everyone wants. But they don't seem to be even entertaining that idea.

    I agree it would be awesome to have a universal subscription including EA Play Pro, but how would they do it?

    It's easy for EA to say 'hey buy this subscription from Origin and play all the games on any platform' but then how would the other platforms make money from that? This is why I say it's not entirely EA, they have to follow each platforms rules and if each platform don't make money from it then they won't allow EA to do it.

    If Sony or Microsoft etc tried to stop them all they'd need to do is make it public as to what is happening and allow the public to judge who is right. I know that Sony and Microsoft want some profit but in the end the public decides what to buy and there's no saying that they can't work out a percentage based deal e.g. someone buys it on origin and activates it on Xbox Microsoft then get a cut otherwise 100% to EA.

    Plus the public want cross platform games, and they want to play on a PC with incredible graphics and then sit on the sofa with friends for couch coop on the xbox/PlayStation. And until PC flushes out coop games it's still in the consoles hands but steam is doing good they have play together no with civ and mortal kombat etc so PC is closing the gap.
