Re: F1® 22 - Patch 1.08 Discussion Thread

@PBR3491the "issue" is that AI has reduced weight. People say it only affects the corner exit speed, but forgive me if I am uneducated, lesser weight = higher power to weight ratio, hence higher top speed. If anything, AI can run higher downforce wings and still have the same top speed as me, an intellectual, with lower downforce wings

@BrrapGodLess weight does not necessarily mean higher top speed.

Drag is proportional to velocity squared. Higher top speed is more about the drag coefficient of the vehicle, the cross sectional area of the vehicle, and overall power output of the PU to push against that force.

Less mass will help with acceleration as acceleration is inversely proportional to mass.

  • @KVNR01Less weight does not necessarily mean higher top speed. - that's only in negligible scenarios. When you have a car that is 10% higher than the exactly same car (and we're talking at least 100kg difference in sprung weight), the lighter car will be faster across the board - it can brake later, it can accelerate sooner and it needs less power to achieve the same top speed as its heavier counterpart.

Like, yes, drag is air resistance in other words. That air resistance is going to be the same at certain speed, whether you're a 1100kg car, or 900kg car. But, with a 900kg car you have more power available to you to tackle the said resistance.

    @BrrapGod ???

I never said less weight means higher top speed ... you said that.

Again, if we're being technical, all other things being equal, a heavier car can still achieve the same top speed, it'll just take longer to get there and use more energy in the process.

The main issue that the game has (had?) is the greater acceleration advantage of the AI cars. Acceleration advantages being most beneficial during the corner exit phases of each lap.

I think most here would be fine turning down the AI, but the issue many have felt is that as you turn down the AI, they primarily get slower during entry and mid corner, no where else.

Drivers IRL will purposely be slow during the initial part of cornering and at the apex to make it harder for the following car to pass (they can't get a good run out of the corner). This is why people aren't finding it as useful to just turn down the AI level IMO.

That's my rational and thoughts on what was (is?) going on with the AI. David Greco said as much in one of his comments somewhere that the AI don't have an advantage in terms of overall top speed. It's their ability to reach that top speed sooner.

Whether they can reach top speed sooner because they can perfectly ride the limit of traction or whether it's because their cars are modeled to be lighter, doesn't really matter much. It just needs to be tuned so that people can actually find an AI level that makes sense and creates an enjoyable experience. It's not enjoyable if the AI are just as hard to pass at 70AI as it is at 95AI.
  • I'm also quite happy with the patch 1.08 so far. Did MyTeam with 1.07 in Imola on Sunday (main Race in rain) and it was an absolute catastrophy. 0,6 behind in Rivazza and then 2sec behind after the long straight before 2nd corner. Including ERS and DRS.. really bizzar. So I decided to stop, no fun in it. (As already mentioned in the thread before, lowering AI is not a solution. They just break earlier so instead of racing you just break later before the curve and easy going).

Now 1.08 in Miami worked pretty well. AI had same pace like me, I ended up in training where I should be comparing the construction ranking with the other teams. Some good fights in the race. Yes, 2 bumb-crashes by the AI, like ignoring me completely (where I allow myself a flashback). But also good fights in some corners with a fair AI behavior. Overall pretty good direction.

I would also love to see an AI which in all cases try to avoid a crash. I mean, when I'm half a car lenght in front on the inner side of the curve usually I would expect them to back off and not force a crash. Anyhow from my point of view the patch is really a big step forward.

  • @KVNR01So to your point, a car weighing 1100kg and other car weighing 900kg are both capable of reaching top speed of 220mph, but on Baku straight, the lighter car is at 213mph before the braking zone, and the heavier car is at 206mph. Within the track's limitations, this would still mean that the lighter car has an advantage across the board, and if it doesn't, then why would the game suggest "Weight Reduction" in the chassis development? Shouldn't any development mean a faster car, and if it doesn't, then shouldn't "development" mean better in the context of the game's progression system?

@BrrapGod You develop a lighter car for a lot of reasons, not only for speed. A lighter car will be able to brake in less distance, so you can brake later, car will be more nimble, so better cornering, car will have better acceleration, so it will reach his theoretical highest speed sooner and leave in the dust a car with lower power to weight ratio, etc.

In car racing, weight is the king. For that reason F1 teams spend millions to reduce not kilos, but grams, because with the same power they will be able to get a much better racecar, gaining an advantage all around which would be impossible to gain if they only concentrate in raw power.

What @KVNR01 wrote is correct. Main problem with AI is their power to weight ratio is better than player's, and it's not because different developments paths in My Career. Their car seems to be simply a lot lighter than the player.

@BrrapGod Not thats it’s actually relevant as it’s a different series . But Indy car although heavier have a higher top speed than a f1 car.

And also cars that race Le Mans. Can’t remember their classification as I have never watched it. LMP’s? Or something. Also heavier but higher top speed.

Both Indy car and Le Mans cars pace less drag. Enclosed cockpits and wheel’s,

Reduced Weight with help getting to top speed faster. not to mention faster cornering ability as it massively helps handling. But top speed is more about power and aero.

@BrrapGod Yes ... because physics. Also Alex Gillon altered the game code to remove variables and did this exact test on on YT and confirmed that player cars can reach the same top speed as AI cars.

Whatever differences you're seeing at Baku are due to not being able to control all the variables. Unless you're hacking the game code like Alex Gillon did to control for all the variables, you may see a difference.

The point isn't that lighter weight cars don't have an advantage. I've said as much in my previous comments. Of course they do. My original reply to you was simply correcting your original statement that light weight = higher top speed. That's not technically true if all other variables are held equal.

All other things being equal, a lighter car will brake shorter, wear its tires less, use less fuel, accelerate to its top speed faster, but its absolute top speed won't be higher. Again it'll just get to it sooner.
  • and that’s where it starts to get interesting, because it can’t just be about weight as the ai brakes 50 meters to early then is gone out of the corner like it has zero tyre wear after 20 laps

if it was just a weight issue then the braking would be phenomenal too

if the braking and traction where “proper” or properly balanced then yeah you could just alter the ai to suit your competitive style, use DRS/ERS to gain the advantage to pass.

the issue is deeper like track to track, Bahrain I was last 2.7 off P1 in Q1 - next race Saudi P5 Q2 1 second off ( then in the race 2-3 seconds off pace of leaders and atleast 1-2sec off team mate who I out qualified ) it’s like they have zero or vastly reduced tyre wear - I was going “ok” for about 5-8 laps and then the proverbial hit the fan

    just my two cents worth

it is a good game but has the chance to be great!

** TYRE TEMPS IN THE RAIN - ESPECIALLY AFTER A SC **

    @Vampire_OOE @EA_rephii

I agree with you that the patch did its job and the AIs are "less unfair" to compete against, BUT.. I also had issues with tyres temps after a SC in the rain at Miami..

Season 3, Round 4 (Miami) - the AIs were at 100%, the track was DRY and I started last (actually, P21, because Gasly got a penalty) and then I was able to catch up with everyone else, little by little..

It started to rain around lap 11 - everybody pitted for Inters and then at about lap 20 (of 29 - 50% real life race distance) George Russell was leading, with me on P2 and there was a Safety Car..

From laps 12-20 (in the rain), I was still able to catch up and even overtake a few more guys, until there was just me and Russell and I was slightly faster than him (even in the rain) - coincidentally, the SC happened exactly when I was about to actually overtake him - and during the SC, none of us were doing anything to keep the tyres warm - we were just driving behind the SC for 3 or 4 laps, but when the race resumed..

I had absolutely NO grip at all and the AIs were just as fine as they were before the SC - I was literally losing the rear and spinning on every damn corner (had to use a zillion and a half Flashbacks) and it was SO annoying!!..

Then I decided to check the tyre temps and saw that all of them were around the 60s ºC (very cold, of course) and I assumed that was the reason why I had absolutely no grip - the problem is that no matter how hard I tried, I just could not heat the tyres up, back to the ideal temps (around 90-100 - I believe that goes for the Inters as well, right?), so..

I can only guess that there IS another serious problem here that needs solution or at least some adjustment - in this case is how HARD it is for the PLAYER to keep the tyres in the ideal temp range (even on a dry track) and how EASY it for the AIs to do the same (or even that the AIs are just not affected by tyre temps at all - also shown with their strong race pace right after their pit stops, while the player needs at least a whole full lap to heat up the tyres after pitting) - once again, this is completely unbalanced (as so many other things seem to be between the AIs and the human players)..

    My conclusion for now:

It's not just the top speed, or acceleration, or overall performance that's completely unbalanced between AIs and the players - it's a bunch of other things (big and small) and those need fixing/adjustment as well.

Sadly, it's still unfair and frustrating to compete against the AIs in this game, which pretty much kills and takes away most of the fun from the career modes (which a LOT of people - including me - enjoy).

Also, this makes me wonder if all of this was just a really BAD job by the devs/progs - just a messy and sloppy work, OR if this was all actually done on purpose, because someone thought those were good ideas and good things to do when coding the AIs for this game..

I don't want to sound like an a-hole and I don't want to be unfair or disrespectful to the professionals working to make this game - I'm actually thankful for your efforts, including in releasing patches to make it better - but come on.. releasing a game with this level of issues is just REALLY bad.. (I have to agree with maybe doing a lot of beta tests the next time?) - please, work harder to 'fix' the game and try not to make the same mistakes again in the future - I love this F1 series and sorry for what I'm gonna say, but.. I honestly consider NOT buying the next games and.. yep, it used to have a LOT LESS issues when Codies was not part of EA - just sayin'..

What I mean is: we all KNOW that EA CAN do a better job (if they really WANT to), so.. come on, EA - don't disappoint us!

    Cheers!

    Well said.

tyre temps will be lower for inters and wets

    inters I find 65ish

    wets 50ish

the ai are over powered in wet though

I have been able to adjust chassis in testing to improve wet speed although it can come at a compromise to outright dry qual lap pace

Thing is - the ai in the race can’t  change their chassis so how are they so good in qual and then wet ??

this game is good - it can be great with a few changes that make the game more realistic

like you I think EA absolutely can make these fixes

    will they?

if not…again like you I would struggle to buy another version
