I might try this, don't think I knew it was possible to alter the positions in the existing lineups (4-3-3, 4-2-3-1 etc.). But I might give it a shot.
However, I'd actually argue that I already do this, simply by applying different instructions to different players. My LW is instructed to stay up, so he actually plays as a LS, and one of my CM's is instructed to go forward in a "free role", where he often plays as a CAM pushing up behind the striker. I might try your version of it, altering the names of the positions too, seeing if there's any difference...
I quite often customize my formations especially for the all out attack or defensive set ups maybe not as extreme as this, but sometimes I find a certain formation works better if like a CM was a CAM etxor I want 2 CMs but one playing further up than the other but not making them a Cam and vice versa etc.
Also thought I'd take a quick peak at Ajax in my career as the job become available, they struggling there too, not as bad as irl, but they were 5th half way through the season.
As for your turn around things starting to look better for sure going back to what the club knows best. Still some work to be done plenty of time to catch Feyenoord whether Ajax do this season is a different story

- @Danimal5981 Sounds awful mate. So it's on PC then? I hope they'll fix it quickly. After all, it sounds like a bug for every game mode and not only CM. So I assume that they should be motivated to fix it rather quickly.
Just catching up, I hope they can find a fix for your glitch. I remember having issues multiple times in the past on different platforms (Switch, XBOX, PS4) and it is extremely frustrating. Nothing like losing your save or not being able to get into the game when you have put so much time into a career and were starting to enjoy it.
I really like the background of the new manager, who I know is based on you up until a point. Great mix of adding in realism and facts to make the story work.
