Career mode - team incredibly slow

Today every time I play my team is so slow they can barely move while the other team just passes my players like they're standing still. Every bounce of the ball goes in the opponents favour. What gives? Is the online tournament causing problems with connectivity and triggering the cool protection issue the game used to have with offline play? Game unplayable.
