My controller randomly doesnt work sometimes on pc

Its so frustrating because the controller will work perfectly fine on the menu, then suddenly itll sometimes not work during the game. What a poorly designed game that this would happen so often. I can be in the game and the controller isnt working, but if I press start and move around the pause menu itll work. So the controller works in the pause menu, but not in the match, what a frustrating glitch. If I press setting it says "keyboard", but I dont have the option to switch it to controller mid game. The problem is that the controller will still work for games half the time, the other half its undetected.
