Online friends not appearing in friendlies invites

Im trying to play in friendlies with my friend that appears to be online and is on ultimate team fc24, however, even though we are friends and both in the game, and we can see that we are both online, when we go into “play a friend” neither of us are appearing in the list and we get a message that says “ you fo not have any friends online” we have both checked that “cross play” is activated on both plat forms (ps4 and ps5) why does it not pick up my friend in the invite?
