Possible to progress in FUT without paying?

This is my first FIFA game I'm playing after a long 10 years of football games rest. Played the regular (default teams) Divisions and went up to Division 1, even won it once so while far from perfect, I think I understand its mechanics from a gameplay perspective.
Then I saw the whole buzz about FUT so decided to give it a try. I don't know if people in Rivals are pitted against each other while in the same division like in the main Divisions mode I played before,  but they DEFINITELY don't have anywhere near equal teams, and this becomes so frustrating eventually. I started like 2 weeks ago and my team has an overall of 85-86, mostly gold rare regular players with a couple of TOTY ones of max 86-87 but like my wingbacks and some midfielders are still both 83 regular players cos I can't buy anything better. In Divisions I would dominate with such a team but in FUT Rivals it's nowhere near enough.

Anyways, I have got to division 6 with that team and literally everyone I play against boasts monsters like Eusebio, Puskas, Ronaldo etc. or modern players but super boosted at 90+   When someone is decent at the game it's almost impossible to beat with so unequal squads but even clearly low skill players who just run straight and exploit the monstrous pace and dribbling stats of those icons are hard to contain.

My question is, is this mode really only for players who focus on money making and acquiring the best of the best, rather than playing football? Is it possible for someone who does not want to pay to play ( I am against the principle of spending real money to buy any in-game item or credit) to compete in this mode?
I don't have a problem to wait, and have spent a lot of hours doing Objectives and SBCs, the only way to slowly improve  as with just 600 coins after every match, and some of the real top players everyone is using costing hundreds of thousands/ millions it's clearly impossible to hope to get there just by playing well.

PS. If only the matchmaking algorithm in Rivals only allowed similar teams in strength to compete this would solve almost all of the above issues.

Any advice on where to focus or I should just forget about this if I don't pay and get back to "just football" Divisions?!

Regarding the community, I remember a few years back when they did one of those "win X games in online with X players" to get a trade token

All the community decided it was a chore so to make the process as quick and painless as possible whoever scored first would "win" and the other would quit. If they didn't quit, then you completed the match as normal, no harm no foul.

When EA found out, they threatened to ban players for doing it.

EA literally didn't want the community being nice to each other because, well, who knows why

@Starscreamdali I'VE NEVER SEEN A WORSE FOOTBALL GAME IN MY LIFE. EVEN IF THE GAME IS BETTER LOST WITH KICK RUNS AND OPPOSITION RUNS INTO THE OPEN EVEN WITH EXTREME DEFENSIVE TACTICS TERRIBLE GARBAGE.

@sniperfox29  even as recently as Fifa 23 we had way more objectives that were in the cup mode rather than Squad battles and rivals but like you say, for the mostpart people would work together and help eachother complete the objectives. If it was score X number of goals then people would play goal for goal first half then play properly second half... and it was at the point where people would even carry on playing after they'd finish the objectives just to give games away and help people

But then after the World cup stuff where loads of people got soft bans for playing golden goal they decided to bring in daily/weekly limits into the cups and ever since they've been horrible to play and people don't help eachother anymore. It's a shame, previous years the community felt a hell of a lot better than it does this year

  • 100% pay to win. Can tell me what you want but I will not believe you. Those giving advice you are kind, and it is appreciated, but there's only so much I can do when my last 8 opponents have all had either 96 Pele, 94 Zidane, toty everyone, mbappe, Eusebio. To a certain point you can by on skill alone, but yeah this is 100% a pay to win game.

While it helps to have the best players eventually you are just min maxing. Unless you are pro it won’t really matter. At the end of the year for the last month you get to use all the players to me it doesn’t make that much of a difference.

Also the worst way to match is by team rating. In the old fifas people would use silver teams to match starter bronze teams. While making by division isn’t perfect it’s much better.
