Matchmaking in clubs

Just wondering how matchmaking work as me and my friend went into a clubs game to get promotion matches for elite, we entered the game and found out it's a 2v5. We thought it was to suppose to match us with players that has the same numbers of player but we had to play a 2v5 or we would be doing relegation matches just to stay up in division 1. Unless thst how it ment to work please tell me why this happened and ruin our chance for promotion games.
