In a way similar to the game against PSV, Ajax gave away a potentially good result in the final minutes of the game. The Amsterdam team got torpedoed by The Yellow Submarine, Spanish side Villarreal.
For the first hour Ajax was definitely the weaker side. But the substitues made Ajax better and better as the second half progressed. By that moment, Alberto Moreiro's long distance shot got Villarreal ahead, while ex-Ajax attacker Georges Mikautadze managed to sneak out of Josip Sutalo's sight and double the score.
But towards the end, Ajax pulled one back thanks to substitutes Oliver Edvardsen and Daan Rots. Mere minutes later, Ajax could have, or rather should have, leveled the score. However Davy Klaassen failed, just as he failed earlier to draw level against Olympiacos, or to get his team ahead of PSV. For a third time, it proved to be fatal for Ajax.
Mikautadze made it 3-1 in injury time, leaving Ajax still without points in this year's UEFA Champions League. "We could have had two points, instead we have none. Two goals come because of two indivudual mistakes from our end: both times their striker (Mikautadze) slipped away from our central defender: the first time it was Sutalo, the second time it was Ko Itakura. It shows that we fall short in that regard", was Ajax-head coach Daniel Marzec's conclusion. "If we want to have a realistic fighting chance, we need to win the next round in Azerbaijan. And to do so, apart from erasing those errors at the back, we also need to become more clinical in front of goal."
