I do think EA made a terrible decision to take advice from pros about how to improve the game and make it more fun. They should have, as you say, asked the broader community. Just because someone is in the top bracket of how to play a game, does not make that person the right person to get advice from on how to improve the game for the whole community, In fact it might make them some of the worst people to get advice from as they more than likely have their own interests in mind. I don't want to play like the pros, I find they all play the same and most of their goals are from cut backs and it is very one dimensional.
They most certainly did give EA the wrong advice and if the truth be told, once I heard the pros were going to be helping EA, I had a feeling we would get what we got this year, which is mechanics that simply complement the meta of the game, but can the meta be improved on? Yes of course and it can be expanded so that you do not have just one meta, but by getting advice from last year's pros you clearly restrict this possibility of having more than one meta, because of course they will only want to strengthen what they are already good at, for personal gain, be it better chances at the next pro tournament, or more subscribers on YouTube.
The latest patch was good and a clear step in the right direction and I think the way forward for EA to build on this, is to simply ask the whole community how to improve the game, don't restrict opinions to the pros who are very clique like and all play the same way and are only thinking about themselves, it really is as simple as that.
