I was elite right before the most recent season reset and I've actually found the opposite experience. Everyone quality player I face in rivals, champs or live events follows the same formulaic defense, which requires very little actual skill -- as little defensive pressure as possible. Control the most forward player at all time (striker whenever possible) and let the ai perfectly cover passing lanes. I find that presses are way too easy to breakdown, which is why hardly anyone in division 2 to elite does it, and it's very difficult to do effectively. The only things necessary to beat a press are changing your focus and being patient. Naturally, you have a player advantage with possession because your keeper makes it 11 v 10. Just pass backward and sideways. Instead of your goal being progressing the ball make your goal not losing the ball. Naturally a path forward will develop as you keep passing to the open man. This is partly why tiki taka is so meta and essentially unplayable without. The quicker you move the ball the harder it is to be pressed and the more the opponent's players struggle to keep shape. One through ball is all it takes and their defense is beat. This is why I hate the current competitive scene, the only rewarded gameplay is patient and slow, much less fun in my opinion. Completely agree the games are repetitive because everyone plays the same way so you keep seeing the same patterns. It's very difficult to beat the AI defending, control-the-most-forward-player strategy without skilling through a defender which is dumb because half the time they completely ignore a defender's area of influence, regardless of the quality of the manual defending. I'd legitimately wager half of the goals scored against me are unavoidable due to deflections, immediate win-backs after a successful tackle, shot rebounds, nutmegs or weird glitchy tackles. Dribbling is neither to fun to play against nor fun to play so I have no idea why it is so encouraged by the same broken meta tactics.
