Unable to up my objectives on player career mode.

It tells me to move the left analog + hold a to move the objectives up or down. As i soon as i hit a it skips into the game. I tried waiting for the prompt to clear but still the same thing. Idk how im supposed to hold a if as i soon as i press it the game starts.
