In defense of so-called “AI defending”…
I regularly leave the AI to defend the ball so that I can control an off-ball defender and try to deny incisive passes. Between consistent lag (in my H2H matchups it sticks out like a sore thumb in better than 50% of matches) and the generally poor tactical intelligence of the AI defending (e.g., off-ball defenders failing to play proper angles or keep a good shape), it’s proven to be suicidal for me to do anything but allow the AI to handle the ball-handler why I try to plug the inevitable gaps the AI creates among my other defenders.
I’ve got no problem forcing users to defend the ball (by nerfing AI on-ball defending) IF they give the AI a tactical makeover to make all those others players a bit more intelligent. Judging by what we see in a pure simulation like MM, however, EA has a LONG way to go on this front, and until they show an interest in overhauling the game engine I would have to argue against nerfing on-ball AI defending as it’s essential to maintaining a relatively level playing field.
