Shame (World Championship finals)

Dear EA,

I wanted to talk about the World Championship that took place this weekend in Asia. It was one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever seen. This isn't sport. I watched it, and I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Even worse than the attitude of the champion, Totonaka—who simply decided to pass the ball back and forth until the match ended—was seeing the event organizers allow this kind of thing. It was a total disgrace. There was no match; there was only cowardice. I know this happened in other games, too.

This only happens because EA is permissive and does absolutely nothing to ban this type of behavior. You should encourage fair play among athletes and create mechanisms to protect it—measures that prevent unscrupulous players from winning through cowardly strategies. That final was an absolute disgrace, as was the champion's attitude and the permissive stance of EA—a company that seems to show, day by day, that it doesn't truly care about football or about clean, honest sport.

I’m sorry, but the World Championship just proves my point. I’m not making this up. I sincerely hope this changes—that the game becomes fairer in the near future and that measures are taken to curb the actions of unscrupulous players. It is simply revolting to see what happened in that final. Totonaka is a disgrace, a coward, and you fuel and condone this behavior when you hand the championship trophy to a coward like that.

  • 1440666fd7e443ec, exactly. My take on this:

I care little about FC Pro and such tournaments. I only played the muted streams in the background to get the resources, didnt watch it at all. I did skim through the final after the noise about Totonaka being "cheap"

The current gameplay mechanics and events in that final game enforced the tactics. Whether it was Totonaka, Joe Bloggs, or whoever the hell played the final makes ZERO difference. He used the allowed rules and gameplay mechanics to his advantage. He won, so people will moan about it because he did it with cheap tactics, but then have a look at how Denmark won the 1992 Euro and why the backpass to the goalkeeper rule was changed afterwards.

Now, the reality check. Swap the seats, then everyone who would be in that final, in the same position with the same chances to win a significant amount of money, would do exactly the same, period.

Devs know about this, and it's something being looked at from the gameplay perspective to discourage passive play.

1ydjmnf8m6p2 - While I get the sentiment and that gameplay drove the in-game behaviour, you are going a little out of bounds by attacking another player, which is borderline breaking the forum rules. Tone it down, please. Your feedback does not have to be overly aggressive towards other players.

  • I think it’s fair to criticize FCM coding for making it really difficult to effectively press an opponent who gains a lead and then plays passively. As a gaming experience it simply isn’t fun, and as a football simulation it just isn’t very realistic (for a team to be totally incapable of an organized press). However, I don’t think it’s fair to criticize Totonaka for playing cautiously in a final. After all, we see loads of examples of top teams in real life (both club and international sides) playing exceedingly cautiously in finals. Maybe it’s not what a neutral wants to watch, but it’s a totally valid tactical approach — especially if you deem yourself inferior to your opponent.

So, yes, I’d love to see pressing become a more viable tactical option to prevent passive play, but this is a “don’t hate the player (Totonaka), hate the game” situation.
