Umm. Well I agree with you on the part about it needing to be overhauled, but I don’t agree with how. This should have a basis for quantifiable physical data as the basis for ratings regarding physical attributes. Building from that foundation ratings should adjust from real time data at a significantly advanced level. Advanced metrics then use a curve based on the top performers setting the curve at 99. These data points are available for example with PFF metrics and data points. In this way non physical attributes are adjusted based on performance. Naturally these grades will apply adjustments to players to scale based on the model. Ratings will automatically reflect their performance.
say RB 1 has x carries and y fumbles z yards etc etc. normalizing the data for all RBs will right size an estimated fumble rate if RB 2 had the same amount of carries as RB 1. RB1 and RB2 carry rating would automatically be increased if est fumble rate is less than RB1 and likewise RB1 carry rating would decrease as the baseline for the curve would establish the highest carry rating of all RBs.
this of course is not a complete solution but it is a step towards not being a popularity contest or whatever players were in highlight reels Tuesday morning.
