PC - M26 in fullscreen adjusts the refresh rate to 59hz

When Madden 26 is set to fullscreen, it unexplainably sets the refresh rate to 59hz.

Fullscreen mode allows the application to control the resolution and refresh rate.

Today I installed Madden 22, 24 & 25 on PC and all of them in fullscreen mode set the refresh rate to 120.  I have 2 separate monitors, both set at 120hz right now, but this same behavior in M26 also occurs on my LG OLED TV.

This needs to be fixed, borderless window mode is not good for me.  No, this is not a setting that can be modified in game by setting the game to 60, 120 or unlocked framerate - this is something different built into the game's fullscreen mode.

  • Things I have tried:
    • Full DDU removal of Nvidia drivers, fresh install (August 12, v580.93)
    • Setting Madden26.exe to "disable fullscreen optimizations" in the .exe properties
    • Multiple monitors and a TV that have different max refresh rates (240, 144, 120)
    • Borderless window doesn't control the refresh rate, but it's kind of stuttery for me, which is why I'm troubleshooting fullscreen.
    • Setting Madden to 60FPS, 120FPS, unlocked in-game.
    • Disabling in-game vsync, disabling vsync in Nvidia app.  Setting "max refresh rate" to highest available for M26.exe in Nvidia app.
    • Full uninstall of EA app, including cache removal
    • Full uninstall of Madden26.

Again, this seems like an application issue - no other game that runs in fullscreen gives me this behavior on my PC.

PC Specs:

Windows 11, RTX 4090 GPU, AMD 9800x3d CPU, 64GB 6,000 MT/s DDR5 RAM, NVME storage.

Well, in Fullscreen, the game controls the display ( resolution + refresh rate). The issue I've seen is that Madden 26 is picking a really low refresh rate when in fullscreen, instead of the highest available.

I haven't seen anyone else confirm my findings, it takes a multiple monitor setup.

  • i have no issues running the game with 120 and 400 fps(idk if 400 is shown correctly through nvidia overlay 😇) in all 3 display modes. but when i start xbox game bar, the fps decreases to 60 only in fullscreen mode. on the others 2 modes fps stays as it was befor. maybe additional running programs forces madden to reduce the fps...

  • tested again with the xbox game bar. if i make a screenshot with the xbox controller, fps goes down to 60 for around 5 seconds and then go back up again.

Very interesting! I don't think this should be a hard fix for them - main thing is just bringing it to their awareness.

  • Having same issue and .ini file is nowhere to be found to change it manually. Game runs on 59hz on fullscreen insuffarable
