Audio Sounds Echoed

Hey,

I loaded up Mass Effect 1 in the Legendary Edition, and noticed in the opening scene that the audio was very echoed, almost like all of the characters were in a large hall.

I'm using Audio Technica ATH-M50X headphones, and have a Creative Soundblaster X sound card.

Are there any workarounds for this issue at the moment?

Sound issues are not uncommon in ME1, it is an old sound system the game uses, but this sounds like something that should be correctable in a Sound blaster settings menu.

Did you played with the settings?

Or are the Dialogues in the surround channels instead of the center channel?

  • ME1 uses environmental audio on compatible dedicated sound cards, but the effect is a bit excessive. In the original release this was a toggle in the audio settings, but that didn't work unless you applied a config tweak to enable it. (I posted a guide for this back in the day.) Now that it's fixed in the Legendary Edition, the effect is amplified up to eleven with no option to disable it.

I had the exact same issue, except I used onboard audio with Creative X-Fi MB, which uses software emulation to unlock features of hardware audio (e.g. EAX). The only solution I found was to disable it and use regular onboard audio.

Maybe there's a config tweak to disable hardware audio. I'm not at my Windows PC, but I'm willing to look into this. For now, see if BIOEngine.ini has an option to turn off hardware audio. (I can't test it myself because the software solution I used doesn't install anymore.)

  • I'm guessing the dialogue is on the wrong channel, as like I said, it seems like the characters are in s large hall that echoes, and not right next to me.

I don't have any issues with ME1 original edition with the same set up.

  • I will have a look when home at disabling hardware audio. I've never had an issue with the original ME1 however, even with the same setup.

The audio settings only seem to include sliders for volume in the Legendary Edition, and nothing in more depth.

As far as I can tell, the rest of the sound is fine. It was only when Shephard, Kaidan and Joker start talking in the opening scene that it was noticeable.

As I mentioned, environmental audio didn't quite work in ME1. It only worked after a config tweak. This problem is unique to the Legendary Edition.

  • I found and installed my gaming motherboards onboard audio driver, and plugged my headphones into my motherboard. It's working now. Not as loud as i'm used to, but at least the immersion is not completely ruined by echoing.
