Controls stop responding (And physics/crash issue)

I'm playing Mass Effect 1 that I downloaded with Origin but I'm having some issues. The main one is that sometimes after a conversation or after I open and close the pause menu the controls stop responding. The mouse doesn't move, the movements keys to nothing and pressing Esc make a 'beep' noise like the game recognises it's been pressed but doesn't do anything. The game still runs but I have to Alt+Tab out and manually shut down the game in the task manager.

Another issue that does cause a crash that happens on rare occasions is that I'll kill an enemy but after combat they'll stand back up in an idle animations...and so I shot it, then the game crashed. I didn't get an error message when the crash happened the game just shut down. Another (but different issue) happened when I used the Lift power on a Husk on Eden Prime at the Spaceport, as soon as it hit the floor the game crashed, something to do with a missing collision file (admittedly I only had this problem one time).

The last issue is that very rarely after a conversation Shepard won't move, the controls respond but he won't move from the sport. This occurred when speaking to Morlan during the Dr.Micheal quest, after I left the conversation I had one stuck Shep.

I'm playing the game on Windows 10, I have tried using Origin's repair function without success, I've tried running Origin with the Overlay turned off, I've tried running Origin in offline mode. I've run the game as Admin and I've run it in Compatibility Mode WinXP Service Pack 2 and 3. I have a GTX 560ti with a i7 3930k 3.20ghz CPU, 16GB of RAM, my drivers are up to date and I have the Nvidia Legacy Drivers installed. It worked fine back on Windows 7, I really just want to be able to go through the trilogy again but trying to get passed ME1 is becoming a chore since I can't even seem to make it passed the Citadel without running into issues.

  • Looking at the 1.02 patch the issue I'm having with the controls sound a lot like this, except for me I lose control when just pressing Esc.

    • GUI: Pressing U when first getting control of Shepard and then pressing ESC to close it will not cause the player to lose all input functionality"

    I still have the retail disc version, would there be any difference in playing that over the Origin version? They should be the same right?

    @AuntySocialQueen

    385.41 is the last driver available for your cart. I would suggest to try this one. https://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/123219

    Don't use GFExperience to update the driver > Preform a "custom installation" > Preform a clean installation.

    Also run Origin and the game as Administrator.

    Let "Origin in game" disabled.

    Did you tried another USB port for your input devices?

    Unfortunately those are step I have already taken. Currently I'm having another go with my retail disc copy and I'll see how that goes.
