@EA_DavidI just ran into this problem and noticed others also ran into this problem. On the Planet Eletania where you encounter the Prothean Ruin and to use the Trinkett you got from the Asari Consort, it does NOT work when examining the sphere. This a problem I ask to be fix as part of my completion of 100% Mass Effect 1 Legendary. I've uploaded a picture showing proof.
BTW - this is PC. Not sure if the console players experience this?
The thread you linked to on Reddit seemed like the person wasn't 100% sure they had received the trinket from Sha'ira before arriving on Eletania. I'm on Xbox and it worked for me at least.
I have gone through this quest 4 times on PC, and it has worked as it should every time. The only time I got the posted screen, I had forgotten to go back to the Consort and pick up the trinket.

You have the text below the artifact, as if the game decided you haven't got the necklace from the Asari Consort Sha'ira.
Are you sure you did the quest with the Turian general (Septimus I think, he was in the bar) ? And by doing it I mean solve it with charm or Intimidation, so the Consort will give you her necklace?
To add - you should check with Xeltan before that, or her door will be closed and you won't be able to get the necklace.
Btw, this does nothing in terms of achievements or story-wise consequences. You are presented with some Prothean observations on the Cave-Man dudes of old. That's it.
You missed going back to get the trinket. Had no problem on my wya on PC.
