FPS Tanks after Virmire Choice

Has anybody else seen this situation?  After

Spoiler
choosing what to do with the docile prisoners.  The only choice that kills FPS is choosing to execute the prisoners.

After the events in the spoiler tag, my fps drops below 10fps.  I can restart my machine / game and if i load any save before said choice, the game is running fine.  If i load that save the performance tanks.  If i load a good working save and go make the same choice, the performance tanks again.

Attached is a DxDiag but here are my specs if you don't want to look through that:

Ryzen 5800x

Radeon 6900xt

64GB ram

Radeon Drivers from 4/13 (latest)

Game settings:

Full Screen

1440 Res

Shadows ON

Blur OFF

VSYNC OFF

CAP 240

Film Grain OFF

Antialiasing ON

Occlusion ON

HDR OFF

Doesn't matter what settings i change after the issue starts, the game remains in the choppy, unplayable state.

  • This seems to be related to AMD graphics for some reason.  I know the CMs here are aware of it, and I thank you for posting this up.   Hopefully  this can get resolved quickly, as the only way to avoid this is to NOT make the choice that causes it, more a RPG choice than story changing but still, needs to be fixed.

@wideruled Hey, as mcsupersport says, this being looked into.

If you are dead set on making that particular choice, returning to the Normandy afterwards reportedly will get your FPS back to normal, but I believe that locks out another potential choice.

    Thanks.

There have been a few reports of this happening on Nvidia hardware as well.

@wideruled You may experience a similar bug in the Dr. Saleon side quest, but that one's not as bad because it happens at the end of the mission and gets fixed when you return to the ship, which is 30 seconds later.

Maybe AMD users are just more ruthless?

No doubt about it. We're Team Red because it rhymes with dead.

  • I have an AMD RX 6700 XT and got the same bug on Virmire when I killed the Salarian indoctrinated commandos. Game dropped to 4 FPS. Even reloading a save doesn't fix it, once you've made the choice to kill all the commandos it happens. However, if you can get FAR ENOUGH AWAY from where you made that decision, the frame rate slowly increases. After I left the commandos and went past the krogan scientist and past the asari scientist, the game slowly sped up the farther I went. By the time I talked to Sovereign I was back up to 120hz.

  • Thanks for the info.  I went with a different choice for the time being and the FPS remained stable the whole time.

  • such a weird bug eh? at least I was able to spend a few minutes walking farther and farther away and the FPS slowly increased! I'd love a explanation of what causes this bug, this is seriously weird 🙂

Exactly the same here: Unbearable directly after the choice, and then, after I had a chat with the nice lady a few rooms later, fps were pretty normal again.
