Game stops responding in the same place repeatedly during Reaper IFF mission

During the Reaper IFF retrieval mission, the game freezes in a seemingly innocuous place every time without fail. Right as I enter the room with the Reaper IFF, the console holding it lights up. That's when the game freezes completely. Audio continues, but the game stops responding. I have to forcefully pull up my task manager to get exit the game. It does not crash, it just stops responding.

I've restarted the mission three times, switched companions, and reloaded the game before the glitch 9 times total, but it persists. This mission is plot-relevant, so I cannot continue the game without completing it. This glitch prevents me from making any progress whatsoever.

I hope someone else is experiencing this so that my case can get noticed. Thank you for your time.

  • @weepycatqueen  Try switching the sound output you're using, e.g. built-in speakers vs. headphones connected via jack.

If that doesn't help, try repairing the game.  If you play through Origin, clear its cache:

    https://help.ea.com/en-us/help/faq/clear-cache-to-fix-problems-with-your-games/

and repair the game: open your Origin game library, right-click on the MELE icon, and select Repair.

If you play through Steam, open your Steam library, select the MELE, choose Settings > Manage > Game Properties > Local Files, and click the button to verify the integrity of the local files.

If that doesn't help either, please run a dxdiag and attach it to a post.

@puzzlezaddict Thank you, thank you!! I actually reloaded an earlier save do to some little sidequests, and burst into tears when I encountered this glitch somewhere else.

I followed both of your tips -- verifying my files and plugging in headphones, and one of those definitely worked. (Probably the verification; Steam found 13 damaged files during the scan and replaced them.)

I'm sure verifying game files is standard troubleshooting procedure, but I had no idea. Thank you for taking the time to reply and let me know.
