How do the different classes differ in playstyle

I'm fairly new to the series and am having trouble picking a class. I want to play the dame one through the whole trilogy, so I want to make the right choice. How would you describe the playstyles of all the different classes. On a side note. What is your favorite classes and why

  • @Zesaanzokenzoop  I picked infiltrator (combat/tech) on my first run, in the original series, and was very happy with it.  I chose it for two reasons: because I didn't want to play with space magic, at least in my first run, so that eliminated the classes with biotic powers; and because I like picking off enemies with a sniper rifle.  There were a couple times I wished my character could use a weapon that was untrained or unavailable, but it wasn't a big deal overall.  And I liked the idea of aliens having biotic powers that humans didn't, Kaidan notwithstanding.

One very convenient feature of the infiltrator class is that it comes with electronics and decryption abilities, meaning your character can unlock objects that have loot stashed inside.  As long as someone in the party has sufficient skill, you'll have access to it, but with a different class of character, that would mean bringing along the same teammate all the time or else backtracking to sweep up the loot after a mission is over.  I was glad not to have to do that.

In my current playthrough, which I've barely started, my character is a vanguard (biotic/combat) because that's the same as Wrex in ME1, and he was the teammate I ended up using the most in combat.  And also, why not try out that space magic.

I guess the point is, figure out what abilities you do and don't want your character to have and go from there.  There are plenty of websites that list each class's abilities without spoiling anything.

  • The wiki would be your best bet for an indepth answer. Game mechanics between 1, 2, and 3 differ and the classes take a drastic change between 1 and 2, with 3 turning it up to 11. Short of it:

Adept: force user and mini black holes.

Engineer: tech support at me1, summoner class at me2 and 3 with the addition of drone skills.

Soldier: shoot them till they're dead.

Vanguard: shotgun force user at me1, me2 introduced charge, a way to put the shotgun at an enemy's face. Me3 gave them nova for charge>nova>heavy melee combo.

Sentinel: force user with tech powers and tankiest class starting at me2 with the addition of tech armor skill.

Infiltrator: sniper expert at me1, gained cloaking in me2, got better at it in me3.

Hm, I'd say ME2 Infiltrator feels better for me. Add the fact that ME3 LE cloak is broken, enemies might still see you. The cloaked power usage on ME3 max. level cloak is a welcome addition though.

Also, in ME1, I don't like it when I have to bring another tech expert along, because Shepard cannot learn Electronics and Decryption. I always want to try a biotic class, but end up being an Infiltrator all over again, lol.

  • I find Infiltrator and Sentinel to be my go-to classes because they are flexible.

  • @Zesaanzokenzoop Hello, I have been a soldier in all of my playthrought but I have enjoyed the Stasis and Warp ammo powers. Soldier in ME2-ME3 is greatly improved from ME1 (Adrenaline Rush fully upgraded in ME3, with a fully upgraded Confusion Blast that gains the power of the ammo you have, allows you to use another power while in the Rush if both upgrade paths were carefully chosen does havoc to all opponents) and something that you need to consider there is an Engineer exclusive Paragon interrupt that allows to make an opponent in the ME3 Omega DLC like a fool or you can turn off a plot device if you don't use both Renegade Interrupts you'll know in ME3).
