There, I said it.
I know you(Bioware) want me to pick Reyes, and made her one of the few killable characters in the game, but she's straight with me and the world, has a beautifully complicated backstory, and both the game and her will allow me to meet her snark for snark.
Sloane great pick
It was Reyes for me, at a base level, Sloane was a drug lord and B grade crime boss. At a deeper strategic level, if I am to play MEA2(if its ever gonna be made), Reyes seem like the one who would progress the story further, taking it deeper and darker. What I didnt appreciate is how ryder played out in the scheme, I would have preferred to storm Sloane's HQ in a gunfight rather than watch her get shot in the back and did nothing. Then again perhaps Bioware needed this to play out so that Reyes have a little hold on Ryder. Will see how it plays out, well worst case scenario, I will replay MEA again and progress the story the way I want it to.

As far as Reyes not being a torturer....um, yeah, they do it on his orders, then yeah, he is a torturer. Go back and look around the room, and the hidden base and really talk to people, and look at it through the lens of trying to find evidence of wrong doing and you will see how ruthless the Collective is, even if they are trying to hide it from Ryder. Also think about WHY they have all those pods of animals they are trying to train.....
I am NOT saying Sloane is a nice person....I am simply saying Reyes is not only not nice, but he is duplicitous(two faced) and I can trust Sloane more simply because she doesn't HIDE what she is, it is all out their in your face, whereas Reyes is hiding his evil nature behind a accent, smile, and charm.
I can appreciate why you think you can trust Sloane more than Reyes, but keep in mind that you really can't be sure. She also lies and she has a problem sharing and or conceding power in anyway. This means that if any point she feels like you have more sway than her and or that the Initiative is more in control of Kadara than she is, she will likely be an issue.
Someone that blatantly disrespectful to you for practically no reason is someone who automatically sees themselves as your better and to submit to them anyway cements that idea. Usually, with those personality types, long as you maintain that belief you're fine but once you stop/don't, you will have an issue and you won't see it coming.
But this is fictional so I have no idea what way they'll go with Sloane or if it will even matter really. I can't remember how important the decision mattered in the past regarding picking one person over another (and/or others).
I am actually pretty sure Sloane wasn’t open about the drug dealing, that you only find out its happening through side missions and research.
I don't trust any of them personally !

Just another bad side of the galaxy that once in a while serves a purpose, otherwise is best steared clear of !
It isn't that I think Sloane will never backstab me, it is the way and method of their doing it when or if it finally happens.
Sloane...
Will take a hit out on you, probably with Outcast attack group, after throwing you out of Kadara port. You will also probably get some kind of notice or warning by her change in actions, and then the bullets will fly. If you are good, smart and lucky, you will kill her assassins, and take her out, all pretty much above board and straight forward.
Reyes...
First you will know, is your allies are backing away, your reputation is in shreds and you have few friends left.....then either another enemy will come at you with inside info on you or Reyes will set you up in a trap for you to die. If you survive, you will have a bunch of work to repair all the damage he did, BEFORE you realized he was tired of being your ally.
So of the two, I would rather deal with Sloane, while neither is straight up trustworthy, I feel Sloane is more straight forward and thus better as a frenemy....Plus while she doesn't respect the Initiative nor Ryder in the beginning, after everything, she does respect Ryder and is a close to calling him/her a friend as Sloane will ever be while she is in her position. Doesn't mean she still wouldn't attack Ryder if she felt the need, but there is Respect.
For lack of a better analogy, think Sloane is the like the lev 1 version of Aria and Reyes is like the lev 1(ok maybe lev 0 LOL) version of TIM... Aria is less dangerous than TIM but he has more impact to the storyline.
So you're just assuming that they both will back stab you and then based on that thought process, basing your decision on who would be most dangerous should they decide to kill you.
Understandable and a logical way to look at things for sure in my opinion.
I guess, while it may not make sense to some (or most), I looked at it as who is most likely to betray me and by that standard, I feel it is Sloane. I actually don't see Reyes betraying us in a manner that is too dangerous.
It's like, I can see him lying to make a buck, but not trying to destroy us from the ground up. That is how he would destroy his enemies, but I think Reyes' personality type is meant to be the criminal who is dishonorable towards the dishonorable and civil to others. In other words, I think he genuinely sees us as an ally and do not think he is the type to stab his allies in the back.
I completely understand people disagreeing with that idea and of course, this being fiction they could have him betray us and it wouldn't be far fetched should that happen, but that is my assessment.
However, I definitely understand the difference in opinion here and respect your logic (as well as others that thought similarly on this).
I can see how one might arrive at your conclusions but I disagree. This is not to say I am right, only to state my opinion.
Reyes, could have been more out in the open. Done things the way Sloane did, especially after Sloane was dead. He still decides to remain an unknown to most people. I point this out because there is a difference (while they can go hand in hand) between wanting to be important and wanting to be seen as important. And when you want people to see you as important (or in this case as Queen/King) you're likely to perceive threats even where there aren't any if anyone seems to outshine you.
Sloane has a throne, talks down and disrespects everyone including you who could easily had proven to be beneficial to her people. Has a history of being against authority unless she's the one that has it and lies in order to maintain the view of omnipotence and or being invincible in the eyes of people.
So despite Reyes claiming that he wants to be somebody, Sloane is the one that demonstrates more so that she is about ruling others and doing so solely for her own personal gain in my opinion.

i have to agree with this assessment of the situation. and i too could be wrong.

Sloane is driven to protect HER people, aka the Outcasts. Everyone else is expendable or secondary to this need. Thus as long as you don't do anything that would make her believe you threaten them you are reasonably safe in working with her as long as you remember her objective.
Reyes objective is to "To Be Somebody"...to me a fairly dangerous thing for Ryder and the Initiative. If Reyes feels he isn't enough of somebody he will scheme and work to raise himself and destroy any he feels are above him in power. As long as he sees you as helping or giving him power he will be ally, but let his perception change and he will work behind the scenes to destroy you.

I find that an odd conclusion. Sloane is certainly willing to sacrifice her own people for the sake of her power and Reyes chooses not to be in the forefront, which would mean being somebody.
That seems contradictory.
