Yes, inviting friends to the game is now possible only via the in-game Invite button in the lobby :/
I am unable to invite friends no matter what. I've searched the web, changed the settings notifications, and tried the overlay and in-game invite at lobby screen prior to starting actual created private match.
NOTHING WORKS.
I hate this EA app.
ME3MP with friends and family across the USA with headsets was one of my most enjoyable gaming experience ever. Now it's gone.
EA doesn't care. Just give us your money and go to H=LL.
Just to clarify, @Rion-Efesan, when I click on a slot in the lobby or on 'invite friends' nothing at all happens, that's why I was posting here.
I feel for you, @hoovsbin. I came back to ME3 multiplayer mainly to play with friends.
I've also tried various things, such as reinstalling the app and the game, turning the overlay on and off, running both the app and the game in administrator mode but nothing seems to make a difference.
In all the months we've been playing since the EA app came out, there were two random occasions when the game allowed me to invite, but the rest of the time, clicking on invite simply doesn't do anything and other people have to invite me or we have to 'chance it' to get into a lobby together.
Make sure the overlay is enabled in the settings menu of the EA App. Once I turned mine on, it worked again.
