Issues with framerate and picking stuff up.

I got ME3 around December last year, and It's worked fine up until about a week ago.
I usually get around 20 FPS as a framerate, and now it's only down to 9 sometimes. Also, when the framerate drops, I have problems selecting doors to open them and picking up ammo and mods and stuff.

I've deleted the game and reinstalled it, and I have the latest DirectX installed.

I run a laptop on Win 7 which has 6 GB of ram and around 30 GB of hard drive space left.

I'm at a loss for ideas, and I would love any help in fixing this issue.

  • As with ME2, ME3 needs a decent framerate for the game to be playable.

While you haven't posted what graphics card (or integrated graphics chipset) you own, I assume it's below the system requirements. While desktop computers can easily be upgraded, this is not the same for laptops.

If you're fine with 20 fps, you might get that framerate back. For health reasons, I would recommend you never play at anything lower than 30 fps, but that's up to you of course. I've seen a similar problem with a game my brother played, where the framerate was quite good and then took a massive drop after a software update. This is specifically common with Nvidia (my brother owns an iMac with a mobile Nvidia Geforce), which has bad support for older hardware and/or games. If you have recently updated your graphics driver, you should probably roll back to a previous version.

  • Thanks for the help, but I don't think it's my graphics card.
ME2, Skyrim, Minecraft and Bioshock 2 and all my other games run fine, and usually the framerate for ME3 was usually around 20 with no issues. I haven't updated my driver for a while and it's using the same version as before the errors. I checked the package and on canyourunit and both said I met the requirements (I never play games that don't meet them, since I know it could ruin my laptop).

I believe is a DirectX error, as the game crashed one of the and a Direct X error appeared.
This the graphics/video card I have: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470

    **UPDATE**

Just wanted to add that I disablef the 'dynamic shadows' option in the graphics setting, and my framerate is back up into 20s and I have no issues interacting with things now. :D

The Mobility Radeon HD 5470 is actually quite a bit below the minimum card for this game. Your computer also doesn't meet the requirement of Skyrim, Bioshock 2 and Minecraft. The only game you listed that should run properly on your PC is Minecraft. Note that minimum requirements usually mean the system achieves 30 frames per second, since 20 fps causes eye strain.

"Can You Run It" is highly inaccurate and should not be used by anyone. It's safer to look at the GPU hierarchy chart and compare your graphics card to the required card.

Note that you might be able to run games even if your system doesn't meet the system requirements, which you seem to do yourself. Many people even managed to play the original Mass Effect on the Xbox 360, which is absurdly underpowered for the game, with the framerate going as low as 13 frames per seconds in some combat areas. I used to play the original Mass Effect on a Geforce 8500 GT (also below the requirement) and managed to get a somewhat playable framerate at very low resolutions (1024x768), but I was fine with it. Now, I wouldn't be able to bare it. 😛
