It appears I had not been at the right door, and I ended up learning that about 2 hours after I had posted the issue. All is fine now and I have finished ME2.
In my opinion the Human-Reaper larva is terrifying.

Some of the early concepts were a lot more creepy. One of the designs for the Human-Reaper was a giant fetus.
