Mass Effect (2007) freezes now that EA App has replaced Origin

As the title says, my installation of ME is now freezing after about 5 minutes. The only thing that changed was that when I opened Origin it said I had to install the EA App and that Origin would be uninstalled. I've uninstalled, deleted all the files in My Documents, reinstalled the game, and it's still doing this.

Frankly, this sort of stuff where you force a new app on the user and it breaks their games really upsets me.

My specs:
Win 11 21H2

Ryzen 7 5800X3D

RTX 3080 10GB LHR

ASUS Crosshair VIII Hero (Wi-Fi)

32GB DDR4 @3600 MHz CL14

2TB WD Black SN850

Edit:
After restarting the PC the game now freezes at 2 minutes 30 seconds. It's like clockwork.

Turning on EA App in-game overlay seems to have stopped the game from crashing for me. It still asks to run as administrator and only actually launches the game every other time, but now I can play the game when it does choose to launch.

I wanted to check if this may have worked for you @MasterZoen @Resztaczasu

If not to confirm has this recently happened?

Yes if I have the overlay on it always hangs immediately after the splash screen.  I do use mods, but I tried a fresh in stall without mods and it does the same thing.  If I turn the EA App overlay off the game always freezes after about 2 minutes.  Either way I have to kill it with the task manager.  Even with the fresh install I tried a repair as you suggested and it still hangs at the exact same spot.  I have tried a clean boot in between the past couple of attempts to launch.

Edit:  I timed the freeze with the overlay off, it's exactly 2 minutes 30 seconds just like the OP.

You should try to launch the game inside the clean boot. (Make sure all additional things have been applied as well.)

That''s what I did, tried again today just to make sure.  It's still the same, with the overlay turned off in the EA App the game runs for 2 minutes 30 seconds then freezes, overlay turned on it freezes right after the splash screen.

    • Press the Windows key and "R" at the same time.
    • In the new Window, type or copy and paste "%LOCALAPPDATA%\CrashDumps" (Without the quotation marks) > Press ENTER
    • Look if there are any "MassEffect.exe.Xxxx.dmp"  files in the "..Local\CrashDumps" folder.
    • Zip 2 - 3 "MassEffect.exe.Xxxx.dmp" or "MassEffectLauncher.exeXxxx.dmp" files together and upload them at a free file hosting service like Dropbox or Onedrive.
    • Post the link here.

If there aren't any dump files of ME:

    • Press the Windows key > Write: Command Prompt > Right click on "Command Prompt" in the search results > Run as administrator.
    • Copy and paste reg add "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumps\devenv.exe" /v DumpType /d 2 /t REG_DWORD into the prompt Window > Press ENTER.
    • Play the game until it crashes.
    • After the game crashes, let all Windows crash dialogues finish.
    • Press the Windows key and "R" at the same time. > Type "%LOCALAPPDATA%\CrashDumps" (Without the quotation marks) into the new window > Press ENTER.
    • Zip 2 - 3 "MassEffect.exe.Xxxx.dmp" or "MassEffectLauncher.exeXxxx.dmp" files together and upload them at file hosting service like Dropbox or you can use the Onedrive "public" folder.
    • Post the link here.

If you want to undo the automatic dump creation, use the command below in a elevated command prompt (As in point 1) reg delete "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumps" /f

    @holger1405

Even after turning on the automatic dump creation there are no .dmp files for Mass Effect after it locks up.  However, just as a diagnosing too,l I found a workaround to run Origin again instead of the EA App and Mass Effect runs perfectly through Origin.  I played for a couple of hours with no crashes.  Tried it through the EA App again the get the same lockups in the same spots.

@holger1405Thanks!  I know it's likely not a permanent fix, but at least I can play the game until the EA App hopefully gets a fix for this.
