Mass Effect 3 will not start.

Every time I try to play ME3 it fails to launch. ME3.exe appears in my process list for a few seconds but then vanishes. There's no crash report, the screen doesn't flash black or anything, there's just nothing. I've tried many fixes and got in touch with EA support but nothing seems to work. Can anyone help?

Please create a DxDiag, then load the file up. You can do that  with the button at the bottom right corner of the reply window.

Also go to your Reliability monitor (Press the windows key and "R" at the same time and copy or type "perfmon /rel" (without the quotes) in > ENTER) and look if it has ME3 entries.

If yes double click at the last one, copy it to the clipboard, (Bottom left corner) save it to a text file and load it up like the DxDiag.

I could not find any oblivious reason why ME3 should not run on your machine in the DxDiag.

Did you tried to repair the game? (in Origin > my games > right click ME3 > Repair Game)

If that not helps, move all files from your "Save" folder under "Documents\BioWare\Mass Effect 3" to a different location > Test.

I've tried both of those tricks several times. I've reinstalled both Origin and ME3 several times. I've replaced some .dll files as recommended by some other forums. I've run it in every kind of compatibility mode I can. I've disabled Origin in-game and run both Origin and ME3 as an administrator. I've been working on this intermittently for over a year now with no success. I'm getting real fed up with this. All I can think of that's left is reinstalling Windows which I might end up doing when I upgrade to 10 soon anyways.

  • I just can't figure out what problem Origin has with this computer. I never had this kind of problem on my old computer. All my other Origin games have worked on the new computer too.

@BlueBrew Are you using mods at all? If installed incorrectly they could be causing problems.

Out of curiosity (because it's a problem with DAI at the moment for people with AVG and Nvidia GPUs, and it does the exact same thing you describe, or maybe because I'm really tired so my brain is just making random guesses 😛 ), do you have AVG on your computer? If you do, could you try making exceptions for the game and Origin in it (see this post if you need instructions)? If that doesn't work, try temporarily disabling AVG protection and see if that will let the game launch. Worth a try, even if the two games are on completely different engines. (Another program which causes this issue with DAI is something called Teamviewer. Again, worth a try).

  • No, I don't use mods or AVG or teamviewer. just trying to get the vanilla game running and finish my playthrough.

Do you have ME3 and Origin installed to your C: drive?

Please go to your "<drive>:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Mass Effect 3\Binaries" folder and run the "MassEffect3Config.exe".

Under "Grafic" set the game to windowed mode > Test.

No I have ME3 installed on my F: drive. My C: drive only has Windows and the Witcher 3 on it.

And I have already tried the windowed mode fix several times with the exact same results.

The DLL file you replaced, was that the "awc.dll"?

    - If not shout down Origin completely.

    - Download the awc.dll zip file from here.

    - unzip the file.

    - Navigate to your ME3 "Core" folder. (should be "F:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Mass Effect 3\Binaries\Win32\Core"

    - Make a backup copy of your AWC.dll.

    - Move the new "awc.dll" file from the location you unzipped the file into the "Core" folder.

    - Start origin and test.

If that still not helps, I would suggest to install ME3 to your C: drive because there were reports that sometimes ME3 can't get lunched from another drive.

I don't know the reason for that error because I myself run ME3 on my D: drive, but it happened.
