I had the same problem with Mass Effect 1. It is freezing after the final battle, after the cut scene.
I can't import the game to Mass Effect 2.
I guess too many of us is having the same issue at the same moment in the game. There should be a fix for this.
I had the same problem, it kept frezzing and everytime it reached the cut screen it went completly black.
My solution is, let your system cool down for 4-6 hours before trying again, and then put it on casual play.
It worked for me and now I'm no ME2 :D
