Mass Effect Legendary Edition suddenly won’t work

As of this month, I have suddenly been unable to play this game. In ME1-3, as soon as I get past “press any key”, CTD. I have reinstalled it 5 times, cleaned the cache, verified files 5 times, made sure my saves weren’t corrupted, and switched over to Origin instead of EA App. I’ve read other people’s posts on here for help but nothing seems to work.

  • @EA_Shepard  So...what fixed it was reinstalling Windows again and deleting all of my files, then installing MELE before anything else. I really didn't want to do that, but apparently that was the solution. I wonder what on Earth was causing the issues.

@Kurovampgirl Did you happen to Change UAC Controls within Windows?

I am trying to test it a few ways but it will be a trial and error to find out what is happening. Honestly sounds like a program is blocking it but it could be many things.

  • No, I didn't. Should I try reinstalling the game with Windows Defender turned off?

@Kurovampgirl I change Windows Defender and Change UAC Controls within Windows (change back once tested)

Once it is installed or launched, turn everything back on. Windows should ask you the next time you launch it if you want to allow it. Once Windows verifies it as an okay program, it should work.

  • Sorry for the delay. I don't think that it worked... I really don't get what's going on at all. At least before, I could open the game but now I can't even do that. @EA_Shepard

@Kurovampgirl When you launch the game with the changes above, does the game launch at all or does it launch and close down again? The base game itself has not changed but Windows has been doing a lot of different updates so there could be quite a few things that change that prevent a game from opening.

  • Behind the splash screen, there is a box where the game is supposed to open up but it either freezes or has an error that tells me to close it. When I reinstalled Windows (Windows 10 by the way), it installed the most recent version. Before reinstalling Windows, I had backported to a previous version of MELE and that helped a tiny bit. Should I try that again in hopes that it will let me open the game at the very least?

@Kurovampgirl Windows 10 for some reason does have more issues with games than 11. You can try but you may run into the same issue. What it sounds like is something in Windows is stopping the game from launching.

Sadly without being in front of the PC that could be a long list:

    • Firewall settings
    • Windows Defender
    • Windows Updates
    • Windows Security - That message you get that says do you want to allow?
    • UAC settings - this is a big one too
    • The Windows profile could be corrupted

When I reinstall Windows on test machines, I immediately change these to fit the Windows profile. I don't do much else with these other than test games, so I think of all the options that could block a program. I am more than happy to toss out all the steps I go through when I am checking these.
