ME1 Legendary - Save numbering bug?

I save quite often (but I keep around 70 saves at max. My recent saves have gotten to number 999, but then making more saves gives them numbers 1 and 2. Can't save past number 2, instead creating a new one or orverwriting existing one, it always overwrites the save with highest number and stays at 2. Trying to make any save past 2 now is not possible. 

I can delete save numbered 999, but then when saving again it creates one numbered 999 once more, and it still doesn't create "another round" of 3, 4 and so on. Couldn't find more about it except this old topic, which was from before Legendary (it seems similar issue has existed back then): https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/930279-mass-effect/58849205

Playing on PC (Steam).

Any solutions? Can I, for example, safely renumber my save in game folder (to something way lower than 999)?

    @Arcling 

    Renaming the saves should work.

    You can back them up by just copying them to a different location.

    @holger1405 Yep, made a backup. Looks like renaming works, changed numbers in save names from 900+ to 100-200. They are loading just fine. Now it's saving properly again with the most recent number (in this case 200+), it stopped overwriting last save as "2".

    Yeah, that's the original behavior.

    And it's only the first game that got the extra slots (because an external dev did the PC port way back). The other games all have only 30-50 slots or something (maybe it was 99), so you're going to be doing a lot more backing up when you get to them (unless it changed in Legendary, which I strongly doubt).
