ME1 Low FPS on PC (Steam - NVIDIA RTX 3070)

As title states, I'm getting super low FPS on Mass Effect 1 (haven't tried the other 2 but it seems to be a a problem with 1).
The game starts nicely, but about 5 minutes in the fps go down the toilet. Even with a high end GPU.
I've heard it's a VERY old issue with the Origin (which I had to download) overlay, but even after disabling it, it stills shows up and screws up the fps. It seems that disabling the overlay only applies to the launcher but not the actual games.

Is there a known fix for this?

I managed to fix it. For me it wasn't the overlay, disabling it in all ways available (Origin settings and the game's properties) didn't prevent it from showing up when pressing the shortcut to show it.

I tried a number of things, disabled the Steam overlay, set the ME1 exe file to run at high performance (link to instructions below), but what I think actually fixed it was unplugging either my old controller or changing my wireless keyboard for a wired one. I heard the game had some issues with peripherials, specifically things Windows recognizes as controllers and things that use Bluetooth. No idea why, it really shouldn't consume resources needed to run a game, but apparently they do.

I re-enabled the Steam overlay to be able to take screenshots, and it's still running properly.

Here's the link that shows how to force an application to run on high performance settings:

  • I had the same problem.

Solution for me was to disable every overlay in the background. That was (not only) Origin, but also Steam and Geforce Experience.

Don't know if it has to be all together, but it seems to work for me. (Couldn't measure the fps, because ... you know ... no overlay ;-) )

  • Same issue. Fps is garbage after a few mins. Gfx settings dont matter. 2080ti Origin

You need to disable "Origin in game" globally and for the game itself. (Cogwheel next to "Play" > Game properties > General"

Also disable any other software that has a overlay function.

  • FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF.......... Same for me. I finally (hopefully also reproducible) managed to find out the (stupid) reason for the horrible fps:  in my case, it was because of my wireless mouse, a Roccat Leadr mouse.

First I plugged in my wireless keyboard, unplugged a receiver for a Nacon Revolution 2 controller, unplugged the base of my Astro A50 wireless headphones, and also unplugged the bluetooth adaptor of my MB. Then I started the game and BOOM, >150 fps (RTX 3080 OC). I plugged again everything in (while in game), no problems with fps. I re-started the game again, and I had again the same problem with low FPS. This time I only unplugged (while in game) the receiver/docking station of the Roccat Leadr mouse and BOOM, >150 fps again. Now the fps remain high, as they should be.

However, I do have another problem with my ultrawide monitor (5120x1440). The very right side, like on 1/6 of the screen, has a kind of reflection of the very left 1/6 side of the screen. It is subtle, but still annoying. I changed now to 3440x1440 and borderless to avoid that reflection. It is good enough for now. I hope I won't find any more huge bugs from now on (I am so naive...).

  • Sounds like the issue. Unfortunately impossible for me to resolve given my setup and the game is unplayable atm. I have disabled all the overlays and every nonessential application and turned down all the gfx settings without a resolution. Unfortunately i cannot move away from a wireless setup due to the location of my equipment (and that the controller doesnt work)

  • For low framerate or lag with ME1LE, I found a possible solution that worked for me. I had to go into Graphic Settings on my PC, select the ME1 exe application, go to options for the app, then set it to High Performance.

  • I'm having the same issue with 2080Ti. Disablinh overlays didn't work. I'm gonna try other fixes in this thread later.

  • Hear me all!

On PC, even though you might disable VSync, they still have their own hidden version of it, still running.

    They call it "Smoothed framerate".

On systems that can spit out thousands of frames at this point, you might want to turn this setting off, as it is a very crude way of syncing frames.

Go to the "BioEngine.ini" file, hidden at your game's config location (%USERPROFILE%\Documents\BioWare\Mass Effect\Config)

(just copy-paste the text within the brackets into your explorer, it will open the folder)

Find within that file a setting called "bSmoothFrameRate" and notice it equals to TRUE.

Just set it to FALSE, save the file, and start your game again.

If your PC has the horses under its hood, you should now be able to benefit from them.

    Cheerio!
