[PC] - Mass Effect 3 Crash Right After Launch

I'm having a problem with my ME3 installation through Origin. After clicking on Play, the Origin client vanishes for a second, then immediately appears again without the game itself ever starting. In the task manager I can see that the MassEffect3.exe process is running for about a second before it's killed again right away.

I get no error messages, no black or white screen or any indication that the game crashed, other than the fact that it's simply not starting.

The game is in its vanilla state (no mods, no DLCs, just the base game installed through Origin).

I have both Origin and ME3 installed on my P: drive.

I tried to start it in window mode - didn't work.

I tried disabling cloud saves and moved the Mass Effect 3 folder away from `Documents/BioWare` - didn't work.

I replaced the awc.dll file in the game's `Binaries/Win32/Core` folder with https://download.dm.origin.com/usertest/awc.zip (awc DLL from another thread with the same ME3 problem) - didn't work.

I tried a simple reinstall and the repair option from within Origin - didn't work.

I executed both vcredist installer files in the game's `__Installer/vc/vc2008sp1/redist` folder - didn't work.

And didn't work means: nothing changed about the error. The process is still killed after about a second and nothing happens visually.

I'm running out of options here and I'm hoping anyone can help me with this. I have attached the Origin Client logs and DXDiag Information. I can see that Origin is trying to launch the game but I cannot see the error when it's crashing. The latest start of ME3 in the log file is on line 20153 (at least I think that's the start).

Maybe important information: Mass Effect 3 is the only game I had Origin transfer from my old origin account to my new one just a few days ago. Could it be that the ME3 license maybe still refers to my old Origin ID and that check simply fails now with my new Origin ID? Not sure if that could be the cause here...I have ME1 and ME2 installed and they run perfectly fine (those two were originally on my new account to start with).

I'd appreciate any help or pointers on where to look for an error.

I finally got around to calling EA Support about two weeks ago (kudos to those support staff people still working in these times, hopefully from home or another safe environment).

The solution makes me think I wasn't so far off with my initial theory of some kind of game/purchase ID being carried over from my old account which then resulted in that ID being checked against my new Origin account ID and that check failing.

As a last resort I asked the support to completely remove the game from my library, including all DLCs, and then re-add it as a new purchase. And that worked, I could start the game normally.

One last note: apparently ME3 is not being supported anymore (or support being very limited), so if anything goes wrong beyond just simple ini file settings, chances are they aren't allowed to help you anymore. It's sad for me to see that a company, which has the game available for purchase in their store, not supporting a game anymore despite the fact that you can't launch it without their service as a middle-man. In other words, if you have a problem with a game of Origin that's old enough, you're pretty much screwed.

This was happening to other people as well in the last months.

The truth is that the game is no longer supported from the studio in regards to bug fixes and similar.

But support still should give you all the help they can provide, regardless of the age of the game.

@shunyaxgl Hey, fortunately me and my counterparts can work from home, so we're all safe.

As noted in the "lack of support" part, the game is no longer being developed, but I also want to ensure that folks are getting the appropriate help for the game. We have sent some feedback on this, and about setting appropriate expectations, and we'll chase up on this.

    Thanks for the update.

  • @shunyaxgl - you are a genius. I was having the same issue and attempted all of the solutions - uninstalling/reinstalling both ME3 & Origin, disabling antivirus, running all combinations of compatibility modes, AWC/EACORE.dll file swaps, deleting save folders, deleting other folders, running in safe mode/with networking, adding new admin users, 2 CLEAN installs of Windows 10, drank 5 white claws, ugly cried, etc. I had reps having me run all sorts of diagnostics, MSinfos, even a UOTrace to see if there were packets missing from downloads.

I applaud the EA reps for taking the time and energy to look into this as running through all of the diagnostics makes me feel I have a pretty freaking clean computer now lol. . I informed one rep about this discussion string, your solution and asked if they would be willing to remove/put back the game in my library, but he declined several times stating that it would have no impact.

I tried again - got a rep - Gaurav - who, after explaining the issue and the merged accounts, he noticed that I had two copies of ME3 (base game and digital deluxe version - most likely each from different accounts). He  removed both from my library, added the N7 Digital Deluxe version back (saw it in real time, kinda neat) and now I can finally go back to saving the universe from the Reapers. Kudos to him and the team, especially during these whacky times.

hey I've seen this as a possible fix for my issue. I'm trying to contact EA to help me with removing and re-adding the game. Did you have to call up a number? or is there a link you can share?

    Interesting.

I have exactly the same failure to launch issue.  And like you, I suspected the root cause was some broken account link (the ME3 was moved from another account, but that's a long sad story).  After trying all the usual steps you detailed, I got a rep today to try the exact same thing.  Removed game from account, re-added (and yes, I saw it removed, and it took him 3 tries to get it to re-appear in library) ... Alas, to no avail ☹️  I even tried to get him to install a different version of the game (all this before reading this thread), though he balked at that.

I was pretty optimistic about it working.  But maybe he didn't manage to eradicate any of these possible vestigial "links" to my other account?  I had given up, now damn, you've given me a little hope, LOL.

    Folow-up

So, having seen it worked for @shunyaxgl, I gave it ONE LAST TRY, and ... IT WORKED!

Note, it is EXACTLY what I requested (and was done) the previous try: remove game from my account (not uninstall from my PC, it removed it from my library totally), then re-grant me the game

    1st time:

Worked with tech support.  I saw it disappear from Game Library.  He then re-added it.  Result: same crash as before.

2nd time (many hours later after seeing last post here):

Worked with another tech support.  I copied this thread in attached doc.  Highlighted @shunyaxgl and @mrjamesling posts. Had tech support read it.  Then he did what seemed exactly like try #1 from my end, but this time it worked!

I still have the uber-annoying N7HQ won't link + friends can join my invite + get dropped from game/lobby when host of said game/lobby drops.  But at least it loads.

    So cheers mates, I guess.

  • @DAMReapers glad to hear that the solution worked. Hopefully @EA_David can take this back to the team so that they can include merged accounts as part of EA Help's list of questions they ask players. I should go.

Guys, just a quick update for another fix - this Reddit thread specifies to delete the license files within the License folder at: %ProgramData%\Electronic Arts\EA Services\License

This worked like a charm for me, after stupidly letting Origin merge with my Steam game like it wanted to - apparently the licenses conflict with each other. Just another Origin/Steam hiccup I guess :/

Thanks to everyone in this thread for all the research and effort! I created an account on here just to post this.
