Re: Mass Effect 2 - Physx error

I don't know exactly where the physx setup can be found on the disc.So do not launch automatically your disc, but open it (right click and "open") and make a search on it with keywords "physx".

If you find the setup, launch it (after you uninstalled the version of physx you had before).

Another solution would be to, like the first one, uninstall physx from your computer, uninstall Mass Effect 2 and reinstall it.

To be clear, the issue seems to be that Mass Effect 2 is working with the version of physx provided in the disc, and not with the latest.

    Ok I'm very confused now.

So I need to find PhysX on my system and uninstall it from my computer, then reinstall it from the Disk because the newest version of PhysX will not work with Mass Effect 2?  How do I find PhysX on my computer?

I have managed to find it on the disk under Software.

  • To uninstall Physx on your computer, go on your control panel, and then on "Uninstall a program" where you should find the Physx installed on your computer (Probably called "NVIDIA Physx ...").

That's what I read on forums about this issue, I can't be sure of this as I didn't have this problem before.

This seems to have worked.  The game is running normally now.

To Fully Clarify both the Problem and the Solution

    1) PhysX drivers WILL NOT negitively effect a non-NVidia card since the software itself does not focus on the Graphics card

    2) If you do not have an nVidia Card, and you are getting the Physx update error when trying to Run Mass Effect 2 you must uninstall any version of PhysX you have (even if other games require it) and install PhysX_9.09.0814_SystemSoftware which is found in the software folder of Disc 2 of Mass Effect 2 (or possibly online somewhere)

    3) If you try to update to or already have newer versions of PhysX, the version that is required by Mass Effect 2 will either be overwritten, or otherwise refuse to install because it detects a newer version. In either case Mass Effect 2 will not run and/or stop running

    4) If you play games that require newer versoins of PhysX then you will need to uninstall Physx and reinstall  PhysX_9.09.0814_SystemSoftware every time that you want to play Mass Effect 2, and then reinstall newer PhysX whenever you switch back to your newer games so, I recommend that you keep a copy of both  PhysX_9.09.0814_SystemSoftware and whatever newer version you need somewhere on your Hard Drive in case you need to juggle them for these reasons.

    5) You do not need to reinstall Mass Effect 2 itself, only the  PhysX_9.09.0814_SystemSoftware in order to get it running again

  • ME2 is running fine for me with PhysX 9.12.1031 on Win8 Pro/64-bit, (EA/Origin Store download.)

I am truely happy that it's working for you, honestly on my old machine which has an NVidia card, it runs fine at higher versions of PhysX. However when I tried to install my Origin copy on this machine which has a Raideon HD 7560A (??) I got the Physics failed error after clicking play on the launcher. I tried reinstalling it from my Disc copy which launched the older PhysX setup and it ran fine, however since I also have an Origin copy that doesn't require the disc to play (and all of the DLCs installed) I copy/replaced that content over hoping to save time and hassle. After doing so I got the load failure error again until I reinstalled the older PhysX from the Disc at which point the digital overwrite began working fine. On a whim I tried to manually upgrade PhysX after that and the error cme back again. I had to uninstall the newer PhysX (because the older launcher aborted after detecting a newer version) so that I could once again reinstall the older PhysX from the Disc (which fixed the problem again).

  • @sonevar;  Weird!  Glad this workaround does the job for you, cumbersome as it may be if you have other games requiring a more recent version of PhysX!

Update: A full Uninstall and clean reinstall of my Origin copy works fine now, haven't tried to upgrade PhysX beyond default install yet though *shrug*

I'm glad that this solution worked for you. Unfortunately, when I try to install the older version of Nvidia PhysX from MS2 Dsk2 Windows refuses to do so.  So I updated the PhysX versions to the msot uptodate, as this worked for others and alas that instals but I stll get the 'failed to launch PhsX environemtent error message.

    Suggestions?

I have to say that Mass Effect Trilogy is proving to be a real pain in the neck. I would have though all bugs would be resolved by now. And Origin just gets i the way, with yey another buggy system. This is proving to be a real disappointment.

Thank you very much for this fix. Glad you could help. Seems strange that the community can fix a problem that the games company should have. Ho hum but thank you again.

I know this is kind of old now, but thanks for posting what version of PhysX you need for Mass Effect 2! I just installed the Windows 10 preview and have all my games installed on a second hard drive, but Mass Effect 2 wouldn't start without PhysX. I installed the newest one and it still wouldn't work, but then I grabbed the version you recommended and I'm up and running! Thanks again!

  • I know this is a bit old, but I get this issue when I install the Overlord DLC. Before hand, it worked.

    Would this solution still work?
