Thanks for the quick reply. I installed Origin & the result is the same -- it redirects me to Epic Games Launcher & I have to click on "Install" to run it.
At your EA accounts profile page, under "Connections" is your Epic Account registered under connected accounts?
Yes, it is. Steam & Epic Games are listed as connected accounts.
It is hard to say exactly where the problem lies, but I would think that in this case the Epic launcher is the prime suspect.
Please look at this Epic troubleshooting guide and preform following steps in order. (restart the PC and test after any step.)
- Clear the Epic Games Launcher’s webcache.
- Run the Epic Games Launcher as an administrator.
- Reinstall the Epic Games Launcher.
No go on all three. For number 2 I had to run Epic Games Launcher as admin first & leave it open, then try launching from the shortcut. It keeps directing me to the Epic Games Launcher, where I have to click "Install" to run the game. Same thing with the EA app too.
I also had no idea I was uninstalling all of my Epic games along with the launcher, so now I have to reinstall 438 GB of games -- but I thankfully have a recent backup, so it's really no big deal. I should have known that might happen in the first place.

There is a note in the guide that this will happen, good thing that you have a backup.
Normally, if you click play either from the Shortcut or from Epic launcher, EA app should open and the game should launch automatically.
If you use EA app directly the game should also just launce.
So there is clearly something wrong regarding the connection of the apps and/or missing registry entries. The easiest way to solve this might be to refund the game in Epic and buy it inside EA app, would also get rid of the two launcher problem.
But I don't know if Epic would accept a refund after about a months.
A other test you can run is to create a new Windows user account (Administrator). Don't use local special characters, use only Characters from the ASCII table
- Reboot > Log in to the new user account.
- Test.
They wouldn't accept a refund. I already tried. The limit was only two weeks.
Did you tested with the new user account?
Not sure what you mean. Which post had that suggestion?
Still no good. The link you posted to create a new account gave me a "Page not found," so here's what I did to create a new account in Windows 11:
Start > Settings > Accounts > Other Users > Add Account > I don't have this person's sign-in information > Add a user without a Microsoft account
I couldn't log in to Epic Games Launcher without disabling the VPN in my other account, which I thought was strange, but aside from that, same thing -- Origin launcher forces me over to Epic Games Launcher, where Mass Effect Legendary Edition still just says "Install."
At this point there is not much left to suggest but to contact Epic again and hope that you find a rep that might have heard about such a problem.
All I could suggest are deeper interventions into your system that I would not recommand as long as the game is in fact running.
- @cinematic6436 I've had endless problems with the app since being forced to install it. I'm uninstalled the app and installed Origin, and each time Origin give me the 'update' message, I use Ctrl+Alt+Del to go open task manager and to go to the Origin process to 'end task'. It's an extra step, but it works perfectly. Been playing like this for a week.
Thanks for all your help. I actually disputed the charge for the game since it doesn't work properly & got my money back, so maybe once it goes on sale on Steam I'll pick it up there. I can't justify installing EA/Origin just to accommodate one purchase. I still need to upgrade my GPU in order to take full advantage of what these games can offer anyway, so I don't mind waiting...
I'll save you the trouble, don't bother with Steam either, its the exact same issue as Epic. You must install EA App to play it thru steam now and EA APP doesnt let you launch the game either, so its dead there also.
Ugh. Thanks for the heads-up. Can you launch it directly from Steam, either in the application itself or through a desktop shortcut? Does it at least show up as "Installed" in Steam?
Currently if I click the desktop shortcut, it either launches Origin/EA, which in turn opens Epic, where I have to click "Install" to play the game. Is it the exact same situation with Steam?
Looks like I am having the same problem with @TheValkyrieAsh
For me, it shows up as installed in my Steam account. I cannot launch the game directly, either through Steam or actually clicking the game's .exe. Either way, the game always loops back to the EA App.
When I click the desktop shortcut it's the same as opening it from Steam, the game always opens the EA App first. When launching from Steam the EA App said "Something went wrong... To continue linking your EA Account, head back and start over." I did, and it keeps repeating that.

If you do that I would suggest to you, as to anyone else, to get the game directly in EA app.
You need the EA app anyway, and the connection between the accounts and the second launcher is a problem waiting to happen.
Thank you again for the suggestion. Do you think having purchased it from Epic & previously installed through EA/Origin will interfere with buying it straight from EA? I'm going to uninstall it just to see if it'll let me buy it from a different source. At this point it wouldn't stun me if their technical inadequacies would prevent me from essentially paying for the same three games twice...
Are you even able to play the game at all? I seriously thought I was the only one having problems launching this game. I think there was another similar reddit post (from around the game's initial launch, if I remember) describing what I was going through, but whoever it was never posted a followup.
No I can't, I can't even start the ME: LE launcher from Steam or directly because of the EA App...
Would I have any problems buying it through Origin instead of the EA app? I can't find any sign of it going on sale at EA on IsThereAnyDeal, and the typical price for it is $60. I paid $12 and change through Epic. Origin's had it on sale for $15, which isn't so bad...
Is anyone helping you fix it? I can at least run the game if I wanted -- I just hate the hoops I have to jump through to do it. It blows my mind there can be problems this significant in something that was released a year and a half ago...
It is strange that MELE has a different price on Origin than on EA app. Both are official EA and should have the same price.
Is the region set correctly in both apps? For your other question, it should not make any difference that it was already installed overSteamEpic.Buying it again might be impossible. I tried locating it through Origin's store and it says it's already in my library, even though I first bought it through Epic. I'm trying to download it through Origin just to see if there's any difference this time. I think I first tried installing it through EA. We'll see what happens in 9 hours...
